Rich,
At 15 years old you are probably going to find that parts will be limited in availability and expensive if they are available. With buttons not working, that sounds like probably a controller problem and that would be an expensive part. You would probably be better off putting your money into replacing the dishwasher. The average lifespan on a dishwasher is anywhere from 7 to 10 years, so you have your money's worth out of that unit. Hope this helps!
Which model dishwasher do you have? The Control Lock is a feature that keeps a child from starting the dishwasher when it shouldn't run. The Cancel button will work but not the Start button.
On the DU920QWD, to toggle the Control Lock off, press and hold Air Dry for 5 or more seconds. (Holding it again will turn on the lock.) Most dishwashers will have a the Control Lock key labeled with text in a small font for how to enable the Lock. The direct link to the DU920QWDB4 manual is https://www.whirlpool.com/digitalassets/MLPDF/Use%20and%20Care%20Guide%20-%203376817.pdf .
For other Whirlpool dishwashers, the Control Lock sequence will be listed in the manual. You can get a PDF of many Whirlpool appliance manuals from http://www.whirlpool.com/owners-center/owners-center-homepage.content.html . Enter the model number (from the rim inside the unit) and click on the right arrow.
Thank you for using FixYa. The " control locked " is a safety feature to prevent the inadvertant use of the machine by a child. To unlock the controls press the "end of cycle "button for approximately 3 seconds until the "control locked " indicator light goes out. If you have young children in your home and want to lock the controls press the "end of cycle" button again for three seconds.
Keep in mind, control panel features can differ between models. However, the instructions on how to lock/unlock the control panel are printed on the front panel of these washers and are printed in the owner's manual.
If these prelimiary measures do not work, you may have a more serious problem than a simple operator intervention.
If you have questions, or need further assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.
Keep in mind, appliance control features may differ between models of the same manufacturer. The instructions to lock/unlock the control panel, however, will be located directly on the front panel, and included in the owner/operator manual. If these preliminary steps do not work for you, then you may have a more serious problem. Please post back if you require additional assistance. I hope this helps you.
Same problem and I was about to call for service. Opened the dishwasher to get the model number and noticed a sticker stating to hold down the Heated Dry button for 5 seconds to clear the lock light. Worked for me!
