It's serious enough that you will not be able to fix it yourself. You should send your lens to Nikon for a repair estimate. You will find information on the Nikon USA website regarding where your closest Nikon Repair Depot is located and return procedures.
If the view finder is dim it is likely the iris of the lens is stuck and cannot acquire correct lighting. It need to be repaired by disassembling the lens.
Sounds like the aperture control actuator ring in the camera body is not opening the aperture diaphragm blades fully a repair quote and decide if a different body upgrade may be a better option
Just got a brand new camera. Played around with it a few nights to learn all the parts and buttons. Went to a concert tonite. While waiting for the show I took many test shots to see how the camera would work under these contiditions. Used a 75 to 300 Cannon lens. I had just got the settings about right when the show started. All of a sudden the display went dark and "busy" flashed in the view finder. But it would not take any more pictures. Taking the battery out and removing the sd card did not help. The auto focus and flash still worked but nothing else. This camera is going back to the store if I can't get some help. PLEASE............. vj
Upon startup lens emerges but when screen appears it is white whereas it normally displays whatever the lens sees. When the shutter button is pressed the camera will focus and take a white picture which can be deleted. The camera does not flash although flash is set to automatic and photo taken in a dark room.Camera flashes (weakly) with flash set to manual on.Lens is unobstructed and appears to be perfectly normal.Camera was not dropped.Batteries have been changed.
Sounds like a lens diaphragm problem ( lens stays closed down to F16 and that is why you have a dark viewfinder ). Remove lens and see if you can activate the aperture mechanism via the activator which protrudes from the rear of the lens. You should get nice and brisk action from the aperture . If the movement is sluggish or the lens stays fully closed then your lens needs attention.
Lens fully closed so viewfinder is dark and secondly your auto focus will not work either in this condition ( not enough light reaching the sensor at the bottom of the mirror box ).
Problem is the aperture control mechanism called 'the base plate set' situated next to the mirror box in the body , which is faulty.
This can be repaired but requires removing of the mirror box so that you can access the small drive which has a faulty gear and which drives the aperture mechanism. I charge +- $150 to repair this common problem.
