Washer tub goes off balance every time and washer walks!

Washer tub off balance. washer walks

  • Tbayer Apr 24, 2008

Every time we wash clothes our Maytag washer goes out of balance during the wash cycle. We then cut the wash cycle short and move the dial to rinse to finish the load. Is this easy to fix or is the washer a goner. The wash is only 5 years old and looks great.

There may be a possibility here of the centre hub being worn or the liner tub bearing being worn due to the age of the machine.. here is a list and diagrams of the parts you may need and can get from here:-
http://www.easyapplianceparts.com/MultiModels.aspx?ModelNum=mat13mn&searchTerm=img_CW17-6&RefineSearch=0&imgMfg=Maytag

try to check for slackness when the tub is empty causing a rocking/slapping motion whilst empty. if the tub is used regularly and to its maximum capacity then the likeliehood is these bearings/hubs may need to be replaced.. the "walking" across the floor will be accented by the amount of items plus water in the tub. and if the tub is off balance, then this will be more highlighted when also full of water and items... if you feel this is over the top, then try to lighten the load that is in the tub at any given time. this will determine weather the bearing has indeed worn .the lighter the load, the less "walking the machine should do in cycle.. the only time walking would be unchanged is during the spin cycle, when the speed is of a constant one and it will vibrate at the same rate. placing it on a rubber mat is not a solution but just something that will make you hopefully think it is solved
and you may as well just bolt the machine to the floor and hope for the best

Place the washer on a rubber mat. I got one from the automotive department at the walmart and it stopped my walking.

There is still water sloshing in the tub under the basket after a wash cycle is complete. Kenmore top load 110.21302012

If the pump is working rotate the selector dial around slowly until the pump comes on again. If it doesn't empty the tub then something is blocking the water, flow, i would look at the hoses for links or blockages

Model #GLWS1439FS1, Washer vibrates and walks, Washer is on concrete floor and has been leveled numerous times. Purchesed in Feb '08 and this problem started about 4 months ago.

Good Afternoon, Mayconst:

The quick and dirty method is to head for the local dollar shop for some furniture moving pads or sliders, but that won't stop the damage that caused the machine to walk in the first place. That leave the slow and dirty method.

First, does the machine 'walk' every time you do the wash, or just when there are heavy items in the load? If your washing machine has a liquid filled balance ring at the top of the tub, just under the lid, it will not work if it has cracked and leaked out all of the water in it. Has something gone over the side of the basket like coins, sneaker parts (yes, it happens) or brassiere wires?

Lift the washer lid, check the balance ring. If you have a construction level, place it along the edge at the front of the machine, then at the side. If the bubble is not in the exact middle on both axis, twist up (or down) on the support feet until it is. It may be as simple as sliding a furniture moving puck under the offending foot.

Go back up top, open the lid, and gently squeeze around the edge of the tub. It should give no more than 1/2 an inch, and spring back to center.

Good Luck!

Washer goes off balance so easily, no matter the size of the load, from towels to shirts. We checked the washing machine itself is level. It's so frustrating to have a small to medium load cause the basket...

The tub is out of alignment. The suspension springs are weak and must be tight, the tub must not shake,if so the dampers are faulty.
This suspension must be so rigid that it must not shake around freely . check the pulley arangement , the bearings at the bottom spindle, if out of balance. If there is any anomalies in this ddrive section it must be observed and checked.
A careful analysis is most important to having a first hand information.

Spins out of balance even emty

This model of washer does not have an out of balance cut off switch. If the load is not balanced properly the tub could hit the cabinet sides. If the unit spins evenly while empty & out of balance while loaded, I recommend checking & balancing the load. If the basket spins out of balance while empty, I recommend having the suspension springs & balance ring checked. Be sure not to wash light fabric with heavy fabric clothes. Also ensure that the adjustable feet are level, that's most important.

Washing machine balance is off since we moved it.

There are tension springs attached to the tub. They are for the balancing upon spinning. Check and see if one came loose

Washer stays out of balance

most likely a spring has come off the tub base. there are three short horizontal springs that surround the tub connecting it to the tripod base and one long spring in the very back that connects the base to the bottom back. check these out and reattach if off.

Spins so harder washer walks across the room. the washer is level. the load is balanced. is it the tub inside the washer that is not level

Engage your lid switch so that washer will spin in spin cycle and watch it spin. At end of cycle when washer shuts down the tub should come to a fairly sudden stop if it doesn't then you need to have the brake worked on. If it does post your model number and i'll advise further.

Maytag Washer MDE7400AYW goes off balance while spinning about half the time. Walks across room. Springs are OK. Tub seems very easy to move from side to side by hand.

Typically when the drum spins and walks the washer, it is a loading issue.
As the clothes spin, they collect on 1 side, due to cintrifical force acting upon an uneven load.
THis is especially prevalent in loads that are:
1. small,
2. contain lots of towels and
3. anything else that really holds water and is very heavy when wet (like comfortors, pillows)

These will very quickly throw the load off-balance.

When it happens, pull out some of the itmes, and re-load the laundry more evenly around the drum. Be sure to circle the post with towels and sheets, etc.

If you continue to run the machine off-balance for an extended time, the bearings and seals will wear quickly. Unfortunately, you will only know this when the washer begins to leak out under the machine onto the floor.

Hopefully this will fix-ya....if not let me know please!
