When you say it turns off do you mean motor quits it that the case you motor is over heating and needs to be replace. It wll shut off for a while and then later work fine for three more minutes and do the same. If you mean it quits heating the the thermostadt is sticlking and need to be raplaced.

Whirlpool estate electric dryer model teds680eq1 starts spins heats up then quits 15 minutes later

The operating thermostat has probably failed. When the dryer haets up, it gets too hot and the high limit thermostat turns the machine off. After it cools down, it will start, again.

My old Hot Point Dryer would dry with hot air for about 2 loads (90 minutes) before shutting off in order to cool down -then it would dry again (about 3 hours later). Then the dryer just gave up the ghost...

A dryer motor has an internal thermal proctive device. It may have started out with a severe vent restriction which would not allow proper airflow through the dryer cabinet. A lint build up can result in the motor overheating as you described. The fact that nothing is happening at all would lead me to suspect one of the following. The motor failed completely, a thermal fuse opened, a circuit breaker triped or a fuse opened. Any one of these conditions would prevent dryer operation. But then, so would something as simple as a failed door switch. You may want to get a pro in to let you know what your options are......After you cycle your dryer circuit breaker, or check the fuses.

Dryer wont stay on... it appears to have intermittent heat.

You have a broken belt. This dryer is complimacated but here goes.Remove the console screwsand flip the control panel upwards simular to what they do on washers. Remove the 3 screw in the rear that hold the top and get the top off. Pop the bottom panel and back off the screws holding the front on then remove the screws from inside the top. You can get the front off now. Get the drum out and clean out the dryer. Oil all 4 wheels and idler. You will note the micro switch below the idler. that stops the drum from turning when the belt breaks. You will be a pro if you can fix this one.

Kenmore Seris 90 Front load dryer

I agree with you that the possible culprit is the thermal cut off sensor. The extreme heating could be caused by a malfunctioning thermostat or heating element.
