Problem is TV picture has a vertical chatter(i.e. vertical roll) after it has been on a while. Also, there seems to be a lot of heat being generated when I compare to that of a new plasma as in an store demo.

The picture rolling up and down is caused by the vertical oscillator running off frequency. Usually caused by a Capicator that has burnt out and started leaking and causing the frequency to be off. Static sounds like weak signal, however the vertical oscillator could be corrupting the picture. If you are not a trained TV Technician don't try to fix it yourself. There's a lot of junk back there and knowing where the vertical oscillator section is located and which capacitor is bad will require a tech manual or a 'Sam's Photofacts' to hunt it down.

unfortunatly no. the vert hold is set by black bars at the top/bottom of the video signal (outside of the viewable area). it sounds like your VCR or tape is damaged.
You possibly have a cracked solder joint in the vertical circuit, possible the vertical Ic itself. You'll have to remove the board and look carefully at the soldered connection of the vertical circuit and see if any are ring cracked. Some soldering should fix the problem. If you let the problem go too long the heat these cracks generate will eventaully short the vertical Ic..

Check the video setting in the set-up menu. It may be set to PAL if you are on the NTSC system, or vice versa. Also check the TV input to ensure your're on the correct channel.
"Guest" obviously has no idea what he is talking about. There is no such thing as "frame section" and if the vertical IC, ramp generator or vertical hold circuits were bad, you would have no vertical at all. If you mean that there are thin white lines at the top 3 inches of the picture, and the top of the picture seems folded back on itself, it means that the pump-up capacitor is going bad in the vertical output circuit. This is a very easy thing to correct but should be done by a qualified tech.
Does you set have PIP (picture in picture)?
If it does then the PIP module has a bunch of capacitors that have gone bad (dried out and leaked) causing you to loose vertical sync.
Vertical synchronization is what locks your picture keeping it from rolling.
Even if you don't have PIP then still you have a vertical sync problem.
The set would have to be checked by a tech to find exactly what's happening.

is this a horizontal black line going up or down? if yes, this sympton is caused by a trouble in the integrated circuit or in the vertical oscillator circuit.
this symptons has 2 variations. one is the intermittent rolling of the picture. this referred to as the "loose vertical hold" the other variations is the continuous upward or downward rolling of the picture
