System reguirements to inrease ram memory

Ram Memory typically operates at half of the frequency rate, ('Speed'), that the Processor's -> FSB does.

Your motherboard supports Processors that have either a 400MegaHertz Front Side Bus, (400MHz FSB), or 533MHz FSB, or 800MHz FSB.

(Northwood Core for 400MHz FSB. The rest is in the other solution I provided)

Processor has a 400MHz FSB?
You can use DDR Sdram ram memory that is 266MHz.
(PC2100)

Processor has a 533MHz FSB?
You can use DDR Sdram ram memory that is either 266MHz, Or 333MHz.
(PC2100 and PC2700 respectively)

Processor has an 800MHz FSB?
You can use DDR Sdram that is either 266MHz, or 333Mhz, or 400Mhz.
(PC2100, PC2700, and PC3200, respectively)

NOTE*
When using a processor that has an 800MHz FSB, and using PC2700, (DDR at 333MHz), the PC2700 ram memory will run at ->
320MHz.

JEDEC has set the voltage requirements for DDR Sdram at 2.5 Volts.
'Performance' ram memory that is DDR Sdram may use higher voltages.
Not recommended unless you know how to overclock.

Although the motherboard, and the ram memory module may have SPD, it doesn't always work,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_presence_detect

A lot of times you are faced with going into BIOS Setup, and changing the ram memory voltage, IF BIOS Setup has this feature.
This is why I say overclocking experience helps tremendously.

You want Low Density, Unbuffered, Non-ECC, and a CL of 2.5 for PC2700, and a CL of 3.0, (3) for PC3200.

[Why would anyone want to run PC2100> Lol! ]

I'm looking to upgrade the RAM in my father-in-law's computer (Compaq Presario SR1500NX desktop). All the "see what ram you need" searches on various websites that sell memory indicate PC2700 is...

This is the memory specs for the SR1500.
Presario SR1500NX Memory Specifications Standard Memory 256 MB (removable) Maximum Memory 2 GB Memory Expansion 2 sockets Memory Comments PC2700 DDR SDRAM DIMMs. CPU Type 2.0GHz AMD Sempron 3000+ Model Comments 333MHz FSB, VIA KM400A Chipset.

The PC2700 refers to the RAM speed, so you can use PC3200 which is faster RAM than PC2700, the PC3200 RAM should be more expensive not cheaper unless this supplier has stock he needs to unload.
You will not get any speed performance with the PC3200 RAM because the motherboard cannot make use of this faster RAM.

Upgrading ram

Hi reisrui, yes it is odd. (It's not the first time I have seen this.)
According to you're manual on page 6, under Specifications. The manual say's you can run up to a Max speed of PC3200 400MHz, 1GB in slot one. In slot 2 you can run a Max of 1GB of PC2700 333MHz in slot 2. Every motherboard I have come across that can run two different speeds of memory. The system will reduce the Max speed to the lower MHz memory speed. If you currently are using 512MB PC3200 400MHz in slot 1 & add 1GB of PC3200 400MHz into slot 2 for a total of 1.5GB of memory. The motherboard will ruduce the total memory over all speed to PC2700 333MHz. Motherboards alway run at the lower memory speed if two different speeds are presant.
I can’t be 100% sure of the 1GB of PC3200 400MHz into slot 2, will run at all! Or if it will be reduce down to 333MHz. I am sure you can run 2GB of PC2700 333MHz, 1GB of memory per slot in you're board for a total of 2GB.

If I can help you further, feel free to post.
Suggestions & comments welcomed.

RAM upgrate

you can upgrade to a max of 2gb on that board. These are your 1gb options: 1GB PC2700 333MHz DDR Memory, 1GB PC2100 266MHz DDR Memory, and 1GB PC3200 400MHz Non-ECC Unbuffered 184-pin DDR DIMM Memory. Install a set of any of these and your off and running.
