I am not sure why but all of a sudden, I can't turn the mixer on. It doesn't seem to be an electrical issue; the speed control switch just appears to be locked.

Well, I half fixed it thus far anyway.
I got the speed lever freed up - just by jiggiling it back 'n forth, standing from behind with the mixer sitting upright on my counter. I was surprised when it just clicked free. With a tiny flashlight, I could see that the lever mechanism worked from a sharp angle to move the bar which pushes the circuit board back, (which is on springs) which lets the contacts on the circuit board close up, to run. Pull the lever back to off and the contacts separate, breaking the electrical current.
I sprayed some DW-40 lubricant on the little gear inside where the speed lever joins up, and it freed up even more - works very smoothly now, pushing the circuit board back 'n forth nicely.
But now when I plug it in, nothing happens. Lever works fine, but no spark.
Maybe I should not have used DW-40 ?
Maybe I should have used alcohol spray instead ? Or just plain air ?
I may have disturbed the electrical contacts or dirtied something ?
It's hard to tell.
I'm going to let this dry out a bit with the back cover off and see what happens in the morning.
I'm beginning to think this model was made in China or something.
These things never died so easily in my parents day.
I just had the same problem and solved it. when the speed switch is moved from off to the first slow position, it allows 2 conacts to close on the switch mechanism at the back of the mixer, accessable by taking off the rear piece with one screw. as you face the back of the mixer with the back cover off, you will see the contacts on the inside right top of the switch mechanism. with the cord unplugged, work the control lever and you will see it open and close. mine got burned over time, probably from normal sparking, so i took a sharp knife and scraped off each contact and that did the trick. don't use sand paper or emory cloth, i am told, but you could probably use an automotive point file.
Unplug the appliance. Take it to a well ventilated area and spray some alcohol in the slot where the switch is while trying to move it. This must be done with the appliance unplugged and the appliance must be thourughly dry when you plug it in. Use canned air or if you have one a compressor.

My speed control is also locked on OFF on my mixer.
I took the cover off, to see the inner workings of the speed control lever and I couldn't see anything blocking the motion of it in any way. Prior to it locking into the OFF position, while operating it, I noticed that it would spring forward a little in to the 1st speed position, while I was trying to turn it off ! When it did this I thought, wow this is dangerous, so I would unplug it when I was done, because it would bounce back into 1st speed position after I tried to turn it off ! Then, eventually it locked in the OFF position. So I figure this has to be electrical, and something has to free the switch off the locked position in order for it to be normal again. I pulled the cover off, and checked all the electrical contacts, everything appears shiny and good - I pushed a little on the circuit board - it sits on a spring configuration and moves at an angle i figured, depending on the speed. Very primitive and old technology is my opinion - I didn't expect this. It just appears like I can't take enough parts off to really see whats' going on inside it. The service shop said to "bring it in". There's one shop 60 miles North and another about 60 miles West . What a hassle.
After a short fall, the speed switch is bent. Is there an easy way to fix this at home, or should I take it to a shop?
