try an external usb keyboar first. if the external usb keyboard would work you've got a busted keypad. if the usb keyboard will not work its your motherboard.
Sometimes a problem like that is not related to the keyboard, but to the operating system itself. Hit Control + Shift+Esc keys to bring up the task manager. Click the "Processes" tab and look in the CPU column for excessive CPU use... anything more than 50% .Look to the left and find the program is that is causing the problem. This should give you a start for diagnosis. Average CPU use should run about 2-20%. You can read this at the bottom of the Task Manager. Constant CPU % running higher than this denotes a problem.
