Hi,
To restore your laptop back to factory defaults you will need the restore cds that were supplied with your laptop.
Insert the cd (or the firs if is more than one) and restart your laptop.
When the message appears "Press any key to boot from cd" press enter and follow the wizard to reinstall the operating system and restore your laptop.
Please note that you should backup any data that you would like to keep before the above procedure.

Stuck windows startup screen

Please turn off the computer, start hitting F8 at the startup and then choose last known good configuration. If this does not work, choose Safe mode options. If nothing works, please restore it to factory settings by holding down CTRL key and hitting F11 key up and down at the startup.

My Dell won't boot up at all. Tried booting up in safe mode and everything. Nothing seems to work.

Press F8 the moment you see Dell logo screen and select Last Known Good Configuration. If it still doesn't boot to windows, your operating system might be corrupted and needs reinstallation.

Dell systems has an Image Restore options. In Vista, press F8 on the Dell Logo Screen and select repair your computer. If you're running on XP, Press Ctrl+F11 to boot from the Factory Image Restore partition. Follow the instructions carefully to restore system back to factory image.

If you want to reformat to factory condition, then press Ctrl + F11 at start-up when the blue bar comes up with "Dell.com" on it. If you miss it then just let it start up, then restart and try again. If it still does not work, press F12 at startup and select recovery option. Please note, if you have deleted the Dell Recovery Partition this will not work for you. You will need to reformat by inserting your Operating System CD at Startup and booting from that (F12).

Put recovery disk in the CD drive. On reboot, hold down F12 key. You should get a choice of drives to boot from. Make sure the first two are in the correct order:

1. CD-ROM (optical drive)
2. HDD (hard drive)

then press F10 to save and exit.

Now the laptop should boot correctly from the recovery disk.
