Install ubunto, it is a modern day upgrade over the unsupported Win XP, You won't turn back to that bloated windows, and almost all the software is free.

How can i restore a toshiba equium l20-197 back to factory settings

System restore will not do what your asking.

However there is a way but you will need a Installation cd Assume you have Windows XP

Then you need to borrow or buy a Windows XP Home Edition or Pro

You can buy one used from Ebay.

There are two options !.Repair install this will save all files/data on your hard drive.

Follow these instructions to Repair install.

Boot the computer using the XP CD.

You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive.

Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

Do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console).

I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".

Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.

If Repair is not one of the options, END setup.

After the reboot

Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.

Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears.

Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

2. If you want to do a clean install that will completely wipe your hard drive clean then follow the instructions from this site http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/win...

You will then need to reload all Microsoft Windows Updates and find all other drivers and software from http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/c...

Then wham bam you should be back in business.

hope this helps

How to re install xp on laptop toshiba satellite 1715-s173

Either get a fresh copy of XP with sp3 on it (microsoft doesnt't support anything before that now) and boot off cd and follow the instructions till done. Or use the recovery/operating system disc your laptop came with if you have it and reload your computer. You'll probably have another disc with the drivers for your hardware (network adaptors, etc.) in the computer. Make sure you reload drivers for anything you added and make sure you have installation discs for any programs you added and want to keep. When using the manufacturer's disc your computer will be just like it was fresh outta the store. Including the junkware that was on it (offers, AOL, trial anti-virus, etc.). If you can find a legitimate copy of XP SP3 (I bought one and kept it for later) you can load xp only onto your computer (junkware free) and start totally fresh for real. Install your software and away you go! Be sure to put firewall on before going on internet!

Have windows xp service pack 3 loaded don't have sound

Goto Start, Control Panel, add or remove programs. Uninstall the sound card drivers. Reload the Sound card drivers from your Setup CD. Every thing should work fine then. When you load SP3 some of the drivers get corrupted (lost).

Windows XP

There is another method:
You can reset passwords by using this utility. If you read the instructions provided on the page, it shouldn't be too hard. Just download the cd-image, from the bottom of the page and burn it to a cd. Reboot your computer, with the cd in the drive and the BIOS set to boot from cd. The follow the instructions.

Good Luck,
