System Protect mode after a Flash fire.

The first link has reset information. It would also remove the case and vacuum out any dust. Also see if there is a cooling fan in there anywhere.

The multi selector is the round control on the rear of the camera with the OK button in its center.
The flash mode button is the top button on the selector, it has a lightning flash icon.

Press the flash mode button on the multi selector.
Highlight the desired mode and press the center of the multi selector.

The flash modes are:
AUTO; Flash fires automatically when lighting is poor.
AUTO WITH RED-EYE REDUCTION; Reduces "red eye" in portraits.
OFF; Flash will not fire even when lighting is poor.
FILL FLASH; Flash fires whenever picture is taken. Use to "fill-in" (illuminate) shadows and back-lit subjects.
SLOW SYNC; Flash illuminates mainsubject; slow shutter speeds are used to capture background at night or under dim light

The selected flash mode icon appears at the top of the monitor.

Hello. If you're shooting in Auto mode and you have turned off the flash, your camera will remember that setting and the flash will not fire. If you switch the dial on top of your camera to another mode and then back to auto it should clear the setting and the flash should now fire, if needed. The other thing to try is to hold down the the flash popup/mode button while, at the same time, turning the rear control dial. You can watch your top display and the flash modes should cycle through different options.

You were trying to fire the flash to fast between bursts and not allowing it to recharge itself.
As a rule the flash when first turned on will come up to power and the ready lamp come on is about 3 to 5 seconds, fire it the first time at full power and it will take about 8 seconds fire it again and it's going to take about 10 seconds. If you fire it before it's had a chance to regain full power you just doubled the cycle time to 20 seconds. So by you saying the batteries were getting hot I'd say you were flogging the heck out of that flash firing it every maybe 10 seconds.

Great flash you have there but, you gotta let it charge.

A work around would be to increase the ISO on the camera to three times what you were using, switch your metering mode from "Matrix" to Partial and it will triple the flash battery life before changing and reduce the cycle time significantly.

I'm going to say the lighting was horrible at this event and you had your camera ISO at 100 where you should have cranked it up to at least ISO 800 anything beyond that and you'll have digital noise issues (grain)

Your camera was most likely set on matrix metering mode where the flash is attempting to light the whole room. I'm suggesting you use partial metering where the flash in concentrating on the center part of the frame and focal point for the exposure, the background will go dark.

Not sure about your color but you should have set your "white balance" on the flash icon (lightning bolt) otherwise everything may look a little yellow.

You knoq the SB-800 has a slave mode called SU-4 in the menu. It activates remote flash. When your on camera flash fires so will the slave flash. The slave flash will need to be able to "see" the light from the on-camrea flash to work.

To access the SU-4 remote mode hold the "SEL" button in for a few seconds until the menu appears. Scroll down to the SU-4 setting and turn it on.

When using this method set the flash to manual and set the power as needed.

MORE THAN LIKELY UR ANP WENT INTO PROTECT MODE 2 STOP IT FROM SHORT CURCUITING, CHECK ALL UR WIRE THAT HAVE POWER ON THEM.

The flash modes are as follows:

AUTO FLASH:

Automatically fires in low-light and backlight conditions.

RED EYE REDUCTION FLASH:

This mode significantly reduces
the phenomenon of “red-eye”

same as the auto-flash except
for the pre-flashes.

To change between flash modes:

1 Press the (flash) switch.
● The flash pops up.
2 Press the / (flash mode) button
repeatedly until the desired flash mode
indication appears.
● The flash mode changes ,
● If / is not pressed within 2 seconds after the selection screen is
displayed, the selection screen disappears.
● To de-activate the flash (Flash Off mode ), push the flash back into the
camera.
3 Press the shutter button halfway.
● When the flash is ready to fire, the
(flash stand-by) mark lights.
4 Press the shutter button all the way.
● The flash fires.

I think this is due to the TLL preflash of the 828 internal flash. Each time it actually fires 2 flashes. First one for metering and second one for actual exposure. First "fake" flash probably trigers your external flash which is too early. Slution... hmm i think there are afordable slave adapters out there which detect the TTL preflash, ignore it and fire the external flash on the right timing along with the main flash. cost.. about few tens $ i think. they can detect also infrared light so you can mount IR filter on your internal flash to prevent interfering with the exposure...
