If the hard drive is faulty then to get the laptop functing again then you need to purchase a new hard drive and install Windows in the new hard drive, the device drivers and your programs.
You need to download the drivers from the Compaq WEB support/download page from another computer. Make sure you select your model laptop and the XP or Vista Windows version of the drivers you require and install them. Use this link to download the drivers: -

As I have mentioned in the past these problems are usually connected with improper partioning with the hard drive. My suggestion would be to use FDISK to check for partitions that are marked as not being used.
Be Careful when using Fdisk because it can and will sometimes backfire.
(you can find Fdisk on just about any startup disk
Just make sure that there are startup files on the disk
