I have two lenovo thinkcentre a55, serial numbers 2 apart, bought in jan 2008. the motherboard on both machines has packed up within 4 weeks of each other. Is this too much of a coincidence ?

Could be a faulty batch but saying that there's always goin to be duds in any batch, ur just unlucky. but saying that it could be other factors like humidity, static jumping to the boards, anmials (ants)

Buy a new case. Even though you can get quite a number of motherboards to fit. You will never get the front panel connections on the new motherboard to match up with the custom front panel wires on the Lenovo case.
Right click on 'my computer' > manage > device manager > at the right side of the list search for 'Sound, Video and game controls, right click above it, and select properties and click 'Roll back' ( also update the audio driver)
If u could not hear the audio means check wheather the audio drivers have been installed properly.....if not get the drivers from the site WWW.SOFTPEDIA.COM
