Make sure after popping up the flash, you didn't change the mode into "no flash" mode....an easy way to check is put the flash back down, then proceed to take another photo. If the flash pops up again but did not flash, you have a faulty camera (assuming battery level is at least until the 1/3 mark).

Not sure if you try fresh Alkaline battery. Try it if you havn't already. Fully charged batteries, how do you know it fully charged? The "charger said so"? Your batteries or charger might give you a fault peak reading. Try fresh battery or AC adepter and go from there.
SOURCE: Flash won't fire
If it clicks when the flash is already open, it seems there would be a problem with the flash open sensor. The camera thinks the flash is closed, so it tries to open it again and it refuses to fire, because firing in the closed position would blow the bulb.
Here's a photo of the sensor in a D70. The D40 flash is a bit different, but if you open it (just unscrew the two little screws in front) you'll recognize the sensor clips. Open and close the flash and see if the make contact when open.
(And DON'T fire the flash when open, or at the very least don't touch anything in there when firing or you'll get zapped.

I'm not sure of your problem, but if I understand it correctly, the flash does not pop down on its own, you just push it down and it locks down.

You probably need to change the setting wheel on the top of your camera to either auto or Program (P) to do what you are wanting.

i also did a hard reset (the little squared button under the left side cover), but with no luck.
My D40 has worked awsome and I am serious when I asy I took one photo the flash worked fine then when I went to take another rapid shot ( taking a picture of a toddler) the flash wouldnt go off, it still took the photo but it was so under exposed i had to delete it. Very disappointed considering this happened on Easter Sunday the first Easter my daughter understood about searching for chocolate.
My D5100 is a nice camera but now that im going to use it with my friend, the flash pop up is not working even the flash button on the left side of it. Can anyone help me? I'm so desperate so fix it.
