I have an old kitchenaid K5-A mixer that I inherited from my grandmother. It has been working fine until recently. When my wife turned it on to mix up some cookie dough, the engine started to smoke. I would like to get this fixed since it is such a nice mixer. Could it be dust from all the years of sitting around or something else. If I can get an idea of the problem, I can get it fixed for her. Thank You, Kevin Clemmons

Well Kevin your mixer is indeed old and the parts for it are most likely no longer available. I would first visually inspect and wiring in the unit. if this seems okay, it could be that your field winding is gone or the worm gear inside that drives the unit is simply burnt out. hope this helps.

Thanks

Mixer doesn't work

There are a number of things to consider:

The round ceramic resistor is bad.
One or both brushes are worn out.
The armature and/or stator windings are bad.
A wire connection is no longer connected.
The on-off switch is bad.
The control board has a fault.

Finding many replacement parts for for a K5-A is difficult but not impossible. The folks at WACEM may be able to help.

If you join WACEM (We Actually Collect Electric Mixers), you can find (under Files) the K5-A original service manual.

If the motor is working but the beater does not go round, it is most likely that the sacrificial worm follower gear has given out. These gears are essentially unchanged to the present day and are readily available. The Service Manual shows how to change it.

My wife has a K5A mixer from the '70's that she loves. While I was checking the brushes, I over-tightened the brush cap and broke the threaded part it screws into. Can I get a new part?

The Brush holder caps / covers for the K5 series whether Hobart or Kitchenaid by Whirlpool (after 1986 when Whirlpool bought Kitchenaid from Hobart) will fit the K5-A they just wont be flush like the older Hobart caps. They come in black or white.

Which is the better mixer of these old models: K5A K5-A or K45 SS and what is the difference? KITCHENAID HOBART K5A K5-A 300 WATT MIXER and the KitchenAid Hobart Vintage K45 250 WATT. Thank you

Hello ajlina,

All of these are great home use units, all the attachments are interchangeable between these. The difference between these mixers is the K5 is a 5 quart mixer and the K45 is a 4.5 quart mixer. As I own both of them they are great in the kitchen and have the same durability.

KitchenAid K5 Mixer Bowl Rocks Back & Forth

This may be explained with the bowl assembly. Being a bowl lift mixer, please follow the following steps to make sure the bowl is being secured before mixing:

There are the bowl-holding arms on the left and right hand side of the mixer. You will place the bowl on these arms, securing it onto the pegs.

Also, take your fingertips and press down firmly at the back of the bowl where it is resting against the base. You will hear an audible click as the bowl secures down into a spring latch mechanism on the stand mixer base, allowing the mixing bowl to sit flush and secure.

Are attachments for a KitchenAid K5 compatible with the K55?

That would be incorrect. If the attachment is for a hobart kitchenaid mixer then it will fit all models of kitchenaid mixers including the brand new pro series because the attachment port and drive gear has not been changes since 1925 or 6 when it was first introduce by the Hobart company.

Kitchenaid K5-A mixer ''growling''

Hi . Chevron FM ALC EP-2 grease is what you need for the lubricant. This has a Mineral Oil base, allowing for it to, at some time, drip into whatever it is that you mix without concern for your health. From what I can, tell this is the only thing that needs to be done. Clean out as much of the old grease as possible.

Goto www.mendingshed.com and download for free a Kitchenaid Service Manual that will cover your mixer.

4 1/2 quart kitchenaid mixer head jumps when mixing

Adjusting the screw didn't work for me the first time I tried it.  I was afraid of loosening the screw too much, and so I didn't turn it far enough.  Turning the screw counter-clockwise until it stuck out several millimeters finally worked.
