Try selecting safe mode again, and waiting. Patience is key here. If it works, then try again in normal mode. If not you will have to use the discs, which will erase all the data on the hard drive. As an alternative, you can burn Ubuntu 9.04 from another computer. It is a live CD, so it requires no installation. Navigate to your hard drive, select the files you want to back up, then go to Applications>Accessories>CD/DVD creator.
REmove the Ubuntu CD, and insert a blank DVD or CD and burn your files. Hope this will help.
Hi,
We are facing issues in two different areas of your system
1) Your DVD :
Chck if the DVD you are using is without any scratches. Did you use any untidy DVDs? It might have resulted in dust formation in the reader point of the DVD driver. Please use the DVD cleaner in this case to clean the lense.
2) Your system hangs:
This is because you had shutdown your system without the proper shutdown so many times that some of the system files might have got corrupted. Please run a recovery to find out the corrupted files and reinstall them. If you had stored your documents in any other drive other than the OS drive, its pretty easy, just reinstall your OS again in the actual drive. Else, there might be feasibility of bad cluster formation for which you will have to quarentine those clusters using the format option. Had you stored your files in the OS drive, you this hard disk as a secondary disk and boot from another disk and coy all your files, to be safe enough.
Regards,
Hari
