Restore Windows XP to factory settings If no tools are available from the PC manufacturer, e.g. recovery disc or recovery partition, use the following tools from Windows XP itself to reset a computer to its factory settings:

  • The System Restore software (read instructions if you can boot into the system or instructions if you don't have a Windows XP CD)
  • The installation CD to perform a Repair Install or a reinstall of the system
  • Easy Recovery Essentials

Restore with installation CD

Follow these steps:
  1. Insert the original disc in the disc tray
  2. Start the computer
  3. Press any key when the computers shows the "Press any key to boot from CD" message
  4. Wait for the Windows XP CD to load
  5. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press Enter to access Repair Install.
  6. You must agree to the End-Use License Agreement. Press F8 to agree.
  7. At the next screen, make sure that you have the drive where Windows XP is installed highlighted. This is usually presented as: c:\Windows "Microsoft Windows XP Professional"
  8. Confirm that Setup presents you with these 2 choices: To repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R
To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing, press ESC.
If you don't have the "press R" option, you can't perform a Repair Install.
9. Once highlighted, press R
10.Wait for the process to perform Repair Install
11.
Windows XP Setup will begin to install the operating system again
12.
Continue with the steps of the wizard to setup the system again.

Xp is 100% obsolete now, nobody runs it. and support ended at MS in 2014, you missed that? it is a virus magnet, you are in the 0.2% world wide, using it. the last? love williams post just down load a ISO from where, virus sites,? torrent sites. the tooth fairy? answering for RESET = reload windows fresh. reset really means NOTHING much, or can be everything, 1 bit or 1billionion bits can be reset. the 2 ways are. windows recovery or windows fresh loaded. why use XP now? http://pcdied.com/XP-sux-sg.html

Either youll need a windows xp installation CD or there may be a restoration image on your hard drive you can initialize. If you dont have a XP CD then you can make one by downloading a ISO image of your version of XP (Youll need a cd key to install). XP is old and you should not use it anymore due to security issues.

SOURCE: How do I data fatory reset an hp compaq nx9600

Try pressing [F11] repeatedly on Start-up, to access the Factory Recovery Partition.....

However, PLEASE note that you will NOT find Windows 7 drivers for your laptop if it is that old. (confirmed, HP only supports XP on that model.)

IOW....*IF* you could manage to get win7 to install on it, it is HIGHLY likely that parts of it would not work....video, network, cardbus slot, audio.....all of these would need windows 7 drivers to work properly.

you would likely be able to see a monitor image, but not be able to change the resolution much (stuck at 800x600) and the others....would be hit and miss. and if your network adapters (LAN and WLAN) did not work, I'm not sure of what use it would be to you.....

This is one of the pit-falls in Laptop/Notebook ownership. Although some models have lasted through more than one OS, they are a tiny minority.

I suggest you get a recovery CD for your model Compaq laptop from the HP/Compaq WEB site.
You can download the Recovery CD and device drivers from the Compaq/HP WEB support/download page. Make sure you select your model laptop and the Windows drivers you require and install them. Click on this link to download the drivers: -

Free recovery disks for hp pavillion zd8000 with windows 7

As far as I know, the original zd8000 operating system is Windows XP. If you have Windows 7 installed, then you need to get Windows 7 disc and its product key. If you need the Windows XP reinstallation media, then you can use HP Windows XP reinstallation disc only (for example: HP Windows XP Professional with SP2 disc).

You can't restore a compaq nc6000 unless you have the xp disk.In 7 and 8 its much easier to do this, All newer computers have a separate partition with the factory programs in it,This was not an option in xp or older computers.you will have to re-install windows and get all the drivers and software from the HP website.I hope this was helpful
For HP you have to hit F11 when you first start up your computer..

Are you talking about the BIOS password, or the windows password?
A hard reset will probably reset your BIOS password (see this thread),

To reset your windows password, you need your XP CD-ROM and follow this instruction.
