If you don't have the "press R" option, you can't perform a Repair Install.

10.Wait for the process to perform Repair Install
11. Windows XP Setup will begin to install the operating system again
12. Continue with the steps of the wizard to setup the system again.
Xp is 100% obsolete now, nobody runs it. and support ended at MS in 2014, you missed that? it is a virus magnet, you are in the 0.2% world wide, using it. the last? love williams post just down load a ISO from where, virus sites,? torrent sites. the tooth fairy? answering for RESET = reload windows fresh. reset really means NOTHING much, or can be everything, 1 bit or 1billionion bits can be reset. the 2 ways are. windows recovery or windows fresh loaded. why use XP now? http://pcdied.com/XP-sux-sg.html
Either youll need a windows xp installation CD or there may be a restoration image on your hard drive you can initialize. If you dont have a XP CD then you can make one by downloading a ISO image of your version of XP (Youll need a cd key to install). XP is old and you should not use it anymore due to security issues.

Try pressing [F11] repeatedly on Start-up, to access the Factory Recovery Partition.....
However, PLEASE note that you will NOT find Windows 7 drivers for your laptop if it is that old. (confirmed, HP only supports XP on that model.)
IOW....*IF* you could manage to get win7 to install on it, it is HIGHLY likely that parts of it would not work....video, network, cardbus slot, audio.....all of these would need windows 7 drivers to work properly.
you would likely be able to see a monitor image, but not be able to change the resolution much (stuck at 800x600) and the others....would be hit and miss. and if your network adapters (LAN and WLAN) did not work, I'm not sure of what use it would be to you.....
This is one of the pit-falls in Laptop/Notebook ownership. Although some models have lasted through more than one OS, they are a tiny minority.
I suggest you get a recovery CD for your model Compaq laptop from the HP/Compaq WEB site.
You can download the Recovery CD and device drivers from the Compaq/HP WEB support/download page. Make sure you select your model laptop and the Windows drivers you require and install them. Click on this link to download the drivers: -
