While watching a program, the sound suddenly stops. If I turn the t.v and t.v dish box back on and off, sometimes that works, sometimes not. Sometimes it comes back on by itself. It's all random. Not tech savvy so have checked for loose connections, done resets, etc. but don't have any other ideas

If you have Cox Cable, and are using a Scientific Atlanta box, AND have "On Demand", and the volume suddenly goes out, turn your cable to the "on demand" channel (in Phoenix, AZ it's channel 1) and that usually restores the sound.
It's a known issue, and so far this is about the only solution that works quickly.

Sounds like your SNR is getting too high and causing the signal to overload. A few things can cause this a bad splitter that causes the signal to bleed and introduces noise, or a more common issue is having a weak signal coming from the cable provider and once it goes through a splitter it causes the signal to become to weak to be stable.
Since it sounds like your cable has been working up until recently, you may have had a cable or splitter go bad.
Call comcast and have a technician come out and test the line.
