The tub sensor can cause the washer to act strangely like that. Also there are two mechanical styles of washer branded Maytag Centennial. The model number would help to know we are talking about the one I think we are talking about.

Easy fix. Lid switch is bad. This is a direct drive machine. Older models would wash but not spin these latest babys won't wash or spin with the lid switch broken. To access te switch you flip up the control by using a putty knife to release each end. Older models had a screw that needed to be removed, not so with the newest ones. The switch has 2 hot wires and a ground wire. Jump them 2 hot wires and see if she runs
