Remove the upper thread completely. Install a brand new needle. RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning. Confirm with the owner's manual the threading pathway is correct. Set the upper tension to the midway point between the high & low number. Retest.

Correct tension is when the upper and bobbin threads meet in the middle of the fabric. If bobbin thread is showing on the top of the fabric, loosen the upper tension. If upper thread is showing under the fabric, tighten the upper tension.

Make sure the thread, needle, and fabric are compatible.

Singer sewing arm wont move

This normally happens if you were maybe not using the right needle for the material you were sewing or your bottom or top tension was too loose. It will stitch fine for a while but then the bottom cotton gets so knotted up with the one from the needle, it can a totally entangled itself around the bobbin causing the top needle to stop moving. The only way to get this knot unentangled is with patience and slow but not forcefull turning of the wheel. You need to lift the pressure foot up and switch power off. Gently tuck and pull at the material under the needle whilst slowly turning the wheel back and forth. If this fails unscrew the needle from the top so it's free and lying loose on the material and continue the gentle tucking and turning of the wheel. After a while the tension will loosen enough for you to get able to remove the bobbin, cut the thread and gently pull that thread together with the material and needle still attached to it, through the top. I hope this will help.

My new machine sewed fine in cotton material, but I am having trouble sewing on a silky top.

Machine settings usually need to be re-adjusted when the project materials change, ie the needle size & type, the type/weight of thread, the presser foot pressure, the thread tension, the stitch length, etc. Sewing woven cotton is very different from sewing silk or chiffon. Test on scraps of the fabric before actually sewing on the garment. Even adding tissue paper to the stitching will help prevent fabric puckering.

When you thread the top thread, ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot. This allows the thread to seat completely in the tension disk, otherwise you end up with bird nests or thread nests under the fabric.

I am having issues with threading my machine. I have followed the instructions but every time I sew on the machine the thread on the top sews correctly but underneath the cotton gathers up. What am I doing...

If the thread is bunching under the material it is the top tension. While threading the machine be sure the foot is in the up position until you are done threading it. If you have tried that and it still bunches you need to tighten the tension a bit at a time until it starts sewing correctly. Be sure you are starting with a clean machine and that the thread is not too large for the needle ....

hope this helps.

Bobbin thread is not entering material. Upper thread is in large very loose loops around bobbin thread on underside of material.

Sounds like top thread is not under tension at all. Rethread machine referring to your manual threading diagram and ensure the thread is passing between the tension discs.

If you lower the pressure foot and pull the top thread just before the needle, it should feel firm and not pull easily. If not, its not under tension.

What number is your tension dial set to, if you turn the dial while pulling the thread as above, can you feel any difference in the resistance?

Also a good idea to clean the tension discs regularly, turn number to zero, then run the selvage edge of a piece of clean cotton offcut between the discs. Thread sheds fibres and dye particles and this can build up with time so good practice to clean this regularly.

It is possible that the top tension device has broken, they sometimes have a little spring in there which may have failed.

But try these things first, then if no luck, might be time for a service technician to take a look.

I would try using some tear away stabilizer under your material and stretching as I sew . If, you do not have interfacing try using some good old fashioned gift tissue paper. Make sure that you are using good thread, Sulky or Guterman, cheap thread is terribly linty and causes build up in your machine.

Have you checked not only the top tension but also the bottom (bobbin) tension? Top tension is usually a lever wheel etc on the machine (depending on model). To tighten the bobbin tension you need to tighten the small screw on your bobbin casing.

I don't suppose it could be as simple as this?

Kenmore model 158 15510 will not catch the material to advance it while sewing. The catch plate does not go up high enough.

Feed dogs.

Check the manual for how to engage/raise the feed dogs.

Or, it could be the machine needs cleaning.

Open the bobbin area and the throat plate (plate under the presser foot) and clean with a soft brush or cotton swab.

Make sure you're using the correct foot for the stitch. Is this during sewing or embroidery? Take off the bobbin plate using the screwdriver and remove the bobbin. Make sure everything is clean under and around the shuttle. If you've ever broken a needle the tip might have fallen down into the mechanism and occasionally be jamming it.
