First, make sure the bobbin-winding spindle (located on top of your machine) has been pushed back to the left for sewing. If it is not in the correct position, the needle will not go down and pick-up your bobbin thread. ... Make sure the presser foot is up when seating the thread through the upper tension.
First thing to try is a brand new needle. A bent/damaged needle may not be able to pick up the bobbin thread.
Otherwise, it is possible it has a timing issue, ie the needle is arriving at the bobbin at the wrong time in order to connect with the bobbin thread. Search the internet web sites and videos. There is a lot of information on how to fix sewing machine timing. Or take it for service.
try changing the needle to one that will work with heavier thread you may have to change the bobbin to heavier thread also try adjusting the tension also
Have you got the bobbin in the right way ? Is the bobbin thread in tension? Turn flywheel towards you while holding the tail of the top thread, turn through one rotation so needle goes down into rotary hook then up again to top position. Now pull thread tail and bobbin thread should come up through needle plate in a loop. Draw the rest of bobbin tail up to top.
Can you get a lesson from sm retailer? They should give you a basic demo at least.
Consider buying a reference book on the sewing machine such as singer sewing machine book or similar. Sewing is a skill best learnt in classes if you can.
Picking up the bobbin thread has to be done by manually. Turn off the machine, open the bobbin door, lift the presser foot, hold the end of the upper thread and slowly turn the side wheel till the needle enters the bobbin race and on the way up it will catch the bobbin thread. Pull the upper thread till you lift the bobbin thread too. Put both threads to the back of the machine, close the bobbin door and you should be able to sew.
Ensure the bobbin thread is mounted on correctly and using your right hand turn the gear that makes the needle go up and down until it catches the thread.
I recently fixed my wife maching with the same problem. I found that the screw had come loose that holds the linkage together that rotates the bobbin holder. I was fortunate enough to notice the screw while looking at the machine. To replace it requires taking both the front and back covers off of the frame since the bobbin holder linkage is in the rear behind the needle area. Be careful to insure that the plastic toothed "rail" that runs the bobbin holder is positioned properly or it may break off a tooth. Once I replaced the screw and put the machine back together, it picked up the thread with no problem.
Hope this helps.
I did put a new needle in---
