I'm using an MG5220 and got this same message. Here's how I fixed it.
On the printer control panel press the soft key to select the scan function. Then hit the soft key to select Save/Forward. Then select Foward scanned data to a PC. On the next screen make sure to select the appropriate PC. In my case I'm connected wireless but the selection was set to USB connection and that's why I was getting the error noted above. When I picked the PC that is connected wirelessly everything worked fine again.
What if the Mac that is wirelessly connected does not show up in the list? Thanks.
My PC did not show up until I enabled the WSD Scan option in my printer settings.
You have to scan from the computer, by going into printer and scanner preferences then clicking scan(on my macbook pro)

I also have this problem and tried:
"open the MX Navigator in the Program Files >> Canon folder. when the Navigator is open, select Scan and then choose the type of scan you are doing."
When I do this and try and scan it says 'cannot communicate with scanner. Cable may be disconnected or scanner may be turned off. Check status. Scanner driver will be closed. 155.0.0.
I can print to it so I know it can communicate with the scanner.
CANON
MG5200 PRINTER-SCANNER FIX ON LAPTOP: Click on Canon MP Navigator EX Icon Choose Preferences - Upper Right General Tab Product Name = Choose appropriate printer from menu, if multiple, try each until solution is found Click OK ON PRINTER: Go to SCAN function Choose SAVE\FORWARD Choose "Forward scanned data to PC"
Turn off the scanner and then turn it back on. That seems to fix the problem.
I had exactly the same problem with a brand new Canon Pixma MX870. All the initial installation went perfectly, both in the computer (I have an old Pentium 4 with Windows XP) and in the printer (the Wi-Fi network setup was so easy, just entered the password of my Wi-Fi network at home and that was all).
I was able to print from computer, scan from computer (used the Automatic Document Feeder for a single page I wanted to scan) and also made copies at the machine without computer intervention.
Today I wanted to scan a booklet so it seemed appropriate to use the "scan from machine" because that way I don't have to walk back and forth to the computer to click the button to scan the next page.... well, I went to the machine, pressed the scan button and selected save to PC. My computer was listed on the LCD screen (also my wife's laptop was listed and another laptop we have was also listed).
However, when I was ready to scan (placed the booklet on the glass) and pressed the big round button in the machine to start scanning (the Start button with the green diamond) it said "set the PC to start scan" on the LCD. I didn't know what was the problem...so after reading the onscreen manual on my PC I discovered that you have to have Canon MP Navigator EX running. I did started the MP application....and also made sure the Canon IJ Network Scan Utility was running in the tray and listed my MX870. Everything seemed to be ready but again, the LCD screen on the printer told me ""set the PC to start scan".
I spent like an hour or so trying to figure out what was wrong....as everything seemed to be in place. I didn't get any message indicating a communication problem between the computer and the printer...actually, I can see the printer from the computer...and the LCD screen on the printer also lists all the computers in my network.....so it was frustrating.... I even tried setting the windows firewall (from the control panel) to except all Canon printer software and utilities from being blocked....still the problem continued.
Well, guess what.....after founding this question in FixYa and reading the suggestion to turn the printer off and back on......THAT SOLVED IT !!! It was so easy, damn....I laughed about it... Just turned on my printer again, went to the list of computers on the LCD screen, they were all there (I noticed though that the order they were listed changed a bit...I mean, the position on the list changed...so something went updated with the power off and on).
I tested scanning the booklet from the printer to the computer and all went well. You keep pressing the big round button (with the green diamond) for every additional page you want to scan. Make sure you run the MP Navigator application first and select your scanning options (color, or black and white, etc). Also make sure the Network scanning utility is running in your Windows tray.
I am not sure if you restart any of the computers on your network it then causes somehow the printer scanning communication link to go wrong but if it does, I would just restart the printer again as the first measure....
Thanks to ddarche for posting the solution !!!!
Same for me as well! Such sage advice! I keep MP Navigator open and my Scan Utility is on in the tray. I turned the printer off and on again and now it scans from the printer and sends directly to my laptop! :) Thanks!

Be ceratin the cable is connected propery from the printer to the computer, or that your wireless connection is correctly set up.
if nothing pops up on the computer screen, you will need to manually open the MX Navigator in the Program Files >> Canon folder.
when the Navigator is open, select Scan and then choose the type of scan you are doing.
It is the firmware in the printer. After a while it seems to loose is touch with reality. If you turn off the printer and turn it on again, it will be forced to rescan the network and look for PCs that have the IJ tool running. It will then list all the available computers when you select scan > forward/save > PC > [computer name].
After you have selected the computer you wish to send to, hit the black and white or color button and like magic, it all starts to work again. This functionality is not driver dependent so don't waste you time trying all that.
You have to scan from the computer, by going into printer and scanner preferences then clicking scan(on my macbook pro)
Hi,
I've solved this problem by installing one of the drivers, in my case this one: http://www.usa.canon.com/nw3s/CanonUSA/DownloadContents/English/0100426202EN.htm
You might need another one depending on your printer.
I have the MX870 and just received the same error with mine. Here's what I did that must have caused the problem.
I had a laptop that is wireless but I changed something in my network settings and couldn't connect to my network. I deleted my network wireless connection on my laptop and did a new search for available networks. I found the network and reconnected to the network without a problem.
Right after this I went to scan a document and got the error message on my scanner.
So what caused my error must be similar to the error message that started this question. Does this info help anyone to solve the problem?

Very simple. Delete the printer driver and reinstall it. I had this exact problem and this is what worked for me. If you want to be able to scan wirelessly make sure you do not have a usb cable plugged in when loading the driver.
