Since you didn't mention the make or model, the first general advice we can give you is to check your printer/copier manual's instructions for how to do a "cleaning cycle" on the device. If you have used it a long time and have never done this, a "deep cleaning cycle" may be necessary, Canon and HP devices often have this. If you're just getting some missing "bits and pieces" of words here and there, this may do the job.

Other things to try:

1. Examine the print heads/cartridges to see if they are very messy/dirty. GENTLY clean around them (avoiding touching the head surface itself) to remove built-up ink or toner.
2. Check the area around the printheads for loose dust, bits of paper, and other things things that might fall between the heads and the paper when its working, causing the print to be smudged or interrupted.
3. If there is a lot of paper-dust and so on in the machine, GENTLY blow it out with a can of air or the like.
