Hi, the error code that you have on the CD/DVD drive is a known issue from Microsoft. The error code means "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (code 39)".
Since you are using a Toshiba laptop; you can click on this link http://tinyurl.com/toshibadvd and click on the repair tool on the resolution. This is applicable on both Windows Xp and Vista and will delete the upper/lowerfilters on the registry.

In case that the error code still exist you need to manually delete the upper/lowerfilters under the registry by clicking on this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461/en-us . You need to go the "Run" screen then type in "regedit" and click OK or hit the enter key.

This will surely fix the error code that you have on the CD/DVD drive.

Thanks

Ive notebook satellit L40 with pioneer dvdrw dvr-k15 that did not display in device manager when migrate from vista to XP. Since delete, uninstall, reinstall and edit registered key can't solve the problem.
As cd rom control by IDE Channel, ive accidently update it at IDE ATA/ATAPI controller with Standard IDE ATA/ATAPI controller (already part of compatible hardware) and my DVD/CD-ROM drive suddenly appear part of device manager.

I dont have any idea how its happen , but its work.

Code 39 Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) Recommended resolution

Reasons for this error include a driver that is not present; a binary file that is corrupted; a file I/O problem, or a driver that references an entry point in another binary file that could not be loaded.

Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall or upgrade the driver.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard.
This is what I found from the MS site..

i found the solution at microsoft support website, but i just found in portuguese, so im gonna try to explain how to solve it.
u need to go to start menu and then on the star search u need to search for "regedit"
when u are inside the regedit, look for this subkey "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}"

on the right side u need to del 2 subkeys

"upperfilters" and "lowerfilters"

close the regedit and restart the windows.

hope i can help u guys. it worked for me.

Are these drives you have fitted yourself, or been added as after market drives?
If so you have run in to the odd way Toshiba set their optical drives as master or slave, although this is generally and IDE #1 error.
To fix this you need to solder pin 45 and 47 together.
47 is the key pin here, as it controls whether the drive is in SLAVE or MASTER mode.
grounded, the drive is in MASTER, open, it is in SLAVE.
pin 45 is simply a grounding pin.
So you'll need to open up the drive, turn it over, and put a small blob of solder on the two pins next to each other - 45 and 47.

If they are original drives or used to work then uninstall the drives and the IDE controllers in Device manager and reboot, letting windows redetect and install the hardware. Also try reinstalling the motherboard drivers available from Toshiba's support site.

Dear Sir/Madam,

This is the problem of not matching/support the motherboard of your driver with Pioneer DVD. U just go the manufacturing site of Pioneer dvd and download the driver / updates and then install it. (Before u uninstall the driver). Then fix it.

Thanks

Toshiba dvd burner problem

Try unistalling the dvd drive in device manager. Go to my computer click on view system information. Then click on hardware, then click on device manager find your dvd drive then right click and unistall a warning window will popup click ok. Once you unistall it restart the system and windows will find new device and reinstall the device driver. Then check if this fixes the problem. if this dosnt fix the problem try removing the dvd drive from the laptop and reinsert it. Sometimes the connection losses contact with the terminals.
