First, open up the case and gently vacuum all the dust, especially around the 2 fans.

If still noisy and the problem is the cooling fan (3-5 inches across), buy a replacement fan of the appropriate size at a PC store for $30 - $40. It takes 5-10 minutes to unscrew the old fan and install the new one, and just use the same electric wire from the old fan for the new fan.

If it's the CPU fan, you'll need to have your PC serviced.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I suggest try to call the manufacturer because if happens that its causing plastic burnt or dent due to overheating that means the hardware of the machine is failing, also the automatic shutdown is caused by overheating. If your going to call the manufacturer they have special support for those kind of issue.

I have a HP M1270N Media Center PC. The CPU Fan

The CPU fan is designed to run constantly to prevent the CPU from overheating. The speed depends on temperature condition of the room; slow in cold and fast in a hot room. However if you suspect that it runs too fast them try re-seating the CPU. WARNING: Re-seating should only be done if you are know how to do; don't experiment.

If it is running noisy, you can apply one or two drops of machine oil to the fan's spindle.

Other reasons include deposits of dust; use a blower to remove dust from the heat-sink.

To make sure you CPU is not in a critical state, log in the BIOS and in the hardware monitoring tab check the CPU temperature. It should be near 60 deg Celsius or 140 Fahrenheit.

One thing more, do not apply thermal grease in excess; its a conductive compound and can short the motherboard if it melts and deposits on the motherboard due to high CPU temperature.

Very very slow machine

Before trying to reinstall this systm ste_fou, try these steps:

Turn off the pc
remove cables on the laptop or desktop
remove battery if it is a desktop
press and hold the power button for 5 seconds
reinsert the battery for laptops
reinsert cables on the pc

Turn on the system and check if it is slow...
Then that is the time for you to decide whether to reinstall the system or not...

What fan, cpu fan? system fan? graphics card fan?

Either way clear out any dust which could help cool it which may decude the amount of time the fan is on or slow the fan down.

If it wasn't like it new, then its probably dust inside the fan and you wont be able to fix it as most fans will not come apart too easy.

Easier to get a replacement fan from ebay etc.

I recently had a new power supply installed in my compaq presario SR1318NX, now the fans run almost constantly. The air from the fans does not feel hot, nor does the tower. Is this serious?

Hi,

In a desktop computer the fan is supposed to run constantly otherwise the processor would get that hot the system would repeatedly shut down or even damage the processor or motherboard.

If the fan is noisy then chances are that the fan blades need cleaning of dust.

Other than that you have nothing to worry about.
