My 1991 Montgomery Ward Signature 2000 series, 3/4 hp top-load washing machine makes a loud rumbling noise during the spin cycle. The noise is more than a hum, it's a loud rumble -- but no screeching, vibration or grinding. During low-speed agitation, it sounds a little louder than it used to be -- like a purr -- but not bad. My guess it's a lower bearing, but I'm not sure how to get at it. I've worked on this machine before (changed belt and tensioner pulley, motor bearings seem okay), but I haven't tried going after the lower bearing above the transmission unit. Any advice on how to check the lower bearing?
You have to take the whole drum out and IT IS YOUR BEARING(s). Order all four of them

Yes, bearing, most definitely. It is a cheap part but difficult to replace.

Well it is ethier Belt, Cluch ,motor ,Or transmission. But it does sound like your transmission . The loud clunk is the brake in the gear case ( Trans.). It might have broken off.

Make sure all springs are still in their place tilt the machine back and look under it and you can see them. 2nd all legs must be level as well as the floor.

Its a bearing on its way out. the seal is also probably worn.

sounds like a bearing... although it could be the water pump... water pump is an easy fix... bearing is not an easy fix... take the belt off the bottom of the pump (under the machine) and see if it spins freely by turning it w/ your hand... or if it seems really stiff... if it looks good then it's def. your bearing...
