The lense of my PowerShot A430 is stuck and thereby renders the camera useless. Is there a way to fix this or should I just buy a new one?

Error message: Lens error, restart camera (Restarting has not fixed the problem.) I have tried replace the batteries and removing the SD card. I don't know what else to try.

Zoom lenses - stuck in its housing or fully extended are caused by factors like - knocks, dead butteries debris or some form of corrosion .
This is a risky method and I would recommend for the last option, if other conventional methods don't work.

Provided your lens has collapsed into its housing - you try a little knock on the camera with your palm while pressing the on/off button. If that does not work, you are on your own - to decide.

SOURCE: Lens error

The most common cause of this issue on the L3 is an impact which dislodges the focus element in the very front of the lens. The metal platform that the focus system is mounted to is attached with 1 screw and is able to flex slightly under stress. When impacted it flexes and allows the focus drive to become misaligned. The lens still technically works but the camera senses that the focus is jammed and leaves the lens extended so no components will be damaged by retracting. This repair costs $145 at my shop, not an economical repair for this camera. Some parts of the focus element are accessable from the front of the lens. You can remove the metal cover (it is glued down). Generally you will not be able to re-install the lens barrier, but it can be removed without harm to the camera. When you remove the plastic plate which carries the lens barrier you will see a small metal gear, this is the base of the focus drive.

SOURCE: "Lens error - restart camera" message, but won't restart

I just had the same issue when one of my children drop the camera. I'm not wanting to break anyone's camera but I was able to open the lens cover and pull the lens out and then turning it on it retracted and worked just like it should.

SOURCE: Lens error, restart camera

Lens error is usually caused by mechanical faults concerning lens assembly. The lens cannot extend or retract fully, the error is detected and lens error is returned.
Sometimes this can be fixed playing with the lens during extraction or retraction to help the lens asset getting back to normal.
More often the camera lens must be disassembled and re-assembled by a technician to fix the problem.

SOURCE: My Powershot A580 [Canon] has recieved the "Lens Error - Restart

This trick works for most of these camera types and my canon was revived from this
OK you are probably going to think I am loony giving you this advise But No I am completely sane!

Get a can of compressed air OR acces to a compressor at your local garage Get them to fit the triggered air blower tool to it.

Blow around the lens in all the extension joins the firmly slap it in the palm of you hand with the side of the camera making contact with you palm. Do the procedure two or 3 times and inbetween the slaps turn it on to activate the lens mechanism. I have now fixed about 80 of these cameras with this method. I obtained the fix from Sony who charge $90 to do exactly the same. Keep at it as it will eventually work. One tip, make sure the battery is charged before you do this.

Just installed a new memory card in my powershot A430 and the camera says memory card error, card is locked. how do I unlock?

What type and size memory card? The A430 works with SD cards. It won't work with SDHC cards.

SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

Turn camera on error message keeps popping up lens error, restart camera. Have restarted but still keeps coming up. Can you help please Thanks David

Some problem with the lens.
Look at the lens as it comes out, and listen as well. If it does not come out at all, then internal problems exist.
If there are noises, problems are inside.
If the lens comes out but is not at a straight angle, you may be able to fix it by carefully pulling on it as it extends.

If nothing else, sell it on Ebay as a repair camera.

Lens will not open/extend. Lens error message, but no E18

Due to the tight tolerances inside the lense mechanism - small bits of sand or lint may become trapped in the mechanics.

It is advised to take the camera to a camera repair shop and have it disassembled and cleaned.

There are many small parts and intricacies that will render it totally useless if not done properly.

Camera lense/power

The following blog outlines some repair options for a lens error. They won't work for all cases, but they're worth a try if the camera's no longer under warranty:

Lens error

It seems as a problem with the zooming mechanism (lens would not retract or extended) Press the power button on and hold it down while extending and twisting the telescopic zoom lens. It might fix your problem. In any case it could not make it worse Good luck!
