After doing a normal Shut Down throuh the Task Manager, I tried to start up the 4510s notebook
and I ggot the Windows XP logo screen and then, for a split second, a screen that had a bunch of words in the top half of the screen and then a line that had, maybe, some memory address which I could not possibly read (years of Evelyn Woods training wouldn't help ). The system then displays the
HP Invent logo screen and then the black "We apologize" screen with the Safe Mode options, Last Config and Start Windows Normally selections.
Even when I put in the original Operating Systems DVD that came with the system or an Original Windows XP Professional DVD, the external DVD drive comes on for a while (the internal DVD drive has not worked for
a couple years) but apparently doesn't recogize the DVD and continues booting to the blank screen. I even hooked up another external DVD drive but had the same negative results. The external DVD drive and then
the HDD are in the Boot Order list.
My plan this weekend was to locate the Windows 7 DVD that HP sent me a few years ago as a free upgrade and to install it. Now, I would like to complete copying the files off the HDD to an external HDD, maybe, by using Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Command Prompt (so that I can perform a System Restore).
Any ideas? Thanks.
Its going to safe mode every time...actually Safe Mode is for to change any setting or get backup and some more... better to change the OS.. everything will be perfect after taking data backup... i think it will help u....
Testimonial: "Thanks for the reply. However, I cannot boot to any of the Safe Mode options. If I had, I definitely would have followed your points. I wish I knew some way to slow the boot process down so that I could read the 'error' screen."
If u want the safe mode option after turning ON jst press F8 function key.. then it will appear...If u want the safe mode option after turning ON jst press F8 function key.. then it will appear...

Im not sure if you are wanting to get to start-up repair or trying to get rid of it If you want to access it, Boot system and do a hard nshut down. Restart, you will have the option to Launch start up repair or to start windows normally If you are getting the option screen unwanted, this is primarily due to improper shutdown. Whenever you shut down always try to use shutdown, restart options in taskbar. If in the event you are stuck and need to do a hard shutdown try pressing Ctrl/Alt/del simultaneously to access task manager. Here you can end processes hung up or do a proper shutdown
There may be times when you want to make sure that XP can't be inadvertently shut down. You can use a Registry hack to disable the normal Shut Down. Run the Registry Editor and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer. Create a new DWORD value named NoClose with a data value of 1. Exit the Registry and reboot in order for the change to take effect. You won't be able to shut down Windows in the normal manner from now on; you'll have to run Task Manager by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete or right-clicking on the Toolbar, choosing Task Manager, and then using the Task Manager's Shut Down menu to close Windows. If you want to reenable normal shutdowns, delete the NoClose value.
First of all press ALT+CTRL+DEL and start Task Manager, there is probably some application (or other process) that is not reponding. You can kill them to let the shutdown continue, and know what is causing the problem and maybe find an update for it.
Also this means that your computer has not been rebooted properly since the installation of important system updates. If you have "Automatic Updates" scheduled on your machine, these updates could have downloaded and installed without your knowledge. To fix this issue, let the updates finish installing, reboot and then shut down your computer as normal.
Click "Start."
Click "Windows Update." Click "Install Updates" to begin the installation of any updates that have been downloaded to your Compaq Presario. When the "Restart Now" button becomes available, click it once. Your Compaq Presario will shut down Windows, finish installing the updates and then reboot your computer.
Click "Shut Down." Because the updates have finished installing and have been installed properly, your Compaq Presario will now shut down normally and will not immediately boot back up.
If the computer appears to be frozen in a program, the update will not do you any good. Depending on how long you waited, I would invoke the task manager and see what process is hung up. press ctrl/alt/del simultaneously only once, the task manager screen should appear, select the bottom option. When the window pops up, select the far left tab (applications or programs) and see which is running or which is not. If there is one or more that are not responding, terminate them by selecting them and clicking on the button end program. You will get a warning, acknowledge it and continue. If this was holding up your system, you should be able to restore your system to an earlier point using system restore. If your system is COMPLETELY unresponsive, then you have no choice but to shut it down. hold the power button for 5 sec (default power down) when the system comes back up, it will ask you how you would like to boot, (safe mode normal mode.....) Select normal boot up. Restore your system to the last restore point. When your system is again functioning properly, create your new restore point, then try the update again.
While booting up, press the F8 key several times, you should get a window offering several startup options. Choose "Start in safe mode" This should load a stripped down version of windows.
Once its up, click on start - all programmes - accessories - system tools - system restore (This is for XP, Vista and Win7 will be slightly different) and choose a restore date prior to all your problems.
Try these. Please restart your PC when its booting press F8 key . You will find few option asking for selection. Select that by using up/down arrow key. Select " Last know good configuration" & press Enter. Next page asking for selecting operating system, for example: windows vista or Windows XP etc. Just select the operating system & press Enter again. ( Hope your laptop showing only one operating system ). Your laptop will start normally & all the icon comeback like previous. If not & follow the same problem, then format the OS system and installed it again.
you have a virus and its interfering with explorer.exe. when you start up your computer press F8 startup windows in safe mode with networking and go to start menu and all programs accessory and system tools click on system restore and pick a date before you started notching this problem and click on start restore. if you have any ? call 364-1424
Boot your computer in safe mode, then check the resolution.
Also try to boot your computer in Last known Good configuration, if that doesn't work either then try the following steps as there might be some system file issue:
Log in to the system as you do in usual insert the OS installation disk(xp)
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to view the task manager. Press new Task . Now write this in the field( sfc ' '/scannow) Note :- Instead of ( ' ' ) press space there is no another spaces ok
if you do it correctly you will see a window that copy the files of the system from the CD/DVD to your PC to fix the corrupted files.
Tell me if that works.
