Try using widows paint. Look in windows accessories off the start program menu. If you open windows paint, look for open file from "Scanner or Camera". Most likely you can get the scanner to work again in Vista. Otherwise...try Vuescan scanner software. I think you can get a free trial period online and it should also work. You'll have to pay for that if you like it.
Is it installed in windows as a scanner? Dont use scan button on machine try using scanners or document imaging software that needs to be in place on your computer, ie Document imaging in office or scanners and camera in windows, one sends scan signal from the PC, can use the scan button on scanner only when configued to do such. Scanner has software as does the printer both can found at HP web
you should look through the documentation that came with your scanner. The error message is probably telling you to read the documentation for troubleshooting why the scanner isn't working. Most documentation that comes with devices like that has a troubleshooint section that describes common problems.
Please check if the option cable connected on the back of the scanner is seated properly.
If you are using epson scan to scan from your computer, try to scan using either professional or home mode and choose the correct settings.
