"It is more likely that it is the image sensor that has failed. It may be sorted out for you under warranty. Take it to an approved Nikon service agent and ask them to have a look at it for you. Get a price to fix it, and then go back to the area Service Manager for the manufacturer. Nikon are a top optics company, am I would attempt to persuade them to fix it for you as warranty, or you will start a HUGE FUSS :) It often works for large companies that have SOME respect for their customers. Give it a try, you will never know unless you have a go. "
