I am sorry I should have been clearer about the type of screen I have. The screen is an led type with no inverter. If it was the inverter the problem would have been fixed when I replaced the screen. I have already bought a new laptop but I would still like to find a solution to this problem just in case someone else has it.

Well that eliminates the inverter. Do you get a "ghost image" on the screen? If you boot to safe mode does it work? I don't know how your Laptop controls the on/off of the monitor when the lid is opened or closed, mine has a tiny switch, that when operated by closing the lid it turns off the monitor, and when opened turns it on.I have repaired laptops with bad ribbon cable connections in the rear of the monitor. I have found if there isn't adequate slack will pull out a bit losing a connection. I use Electronic Contact Spray to clean all connections when i reassemble a computer. If the parts are the correct replecement parts, then I would suspect a loose connection. Just a thought.

Yes I do get a ghost image if I shine a light at the panel and also I have hooked it up to an external monitor to check the gpu. I have no problem seeing the image on the external monitor.

I have also replace the cable that goes to the panel.

Taht sound like a backlighting switch issue. Again, I don't know how your Laptop controls the on/off of the backlighting when the lid is opened or closed?

SOURCE: Toshiba Satellite P105-S9722. monitor will not

Hi,
The problem is the inverter cable or the inverter itself.

If you have any warranty left on the laptop then i recommend you take advantage of that and send it in for repair, or you can deal with this 2 ways.
Fix the problem yourself.
Remove the screen bezel (plastic screen surround), this will reveal the whole screen. At the bottom of the screen you will see an elongated piece of circuit board with wires coming from either end covered by frosted plastic.
That is the inverter, check the connections on the inverter and power the laptop up to check the display, to remove it gently pull the plugs from each end and remove the screw from the middle and pull the board away.
Look at the inverter for a copper coil, if you re-solder the solder points around the coil you may find it works again as components that suffer from extreme heat the solder joints dry causing bad connections, re-floating the solder solves the problem in 90% of cases.

Take the laptop for repair.
In this case all you have to do is source a reputable PC repair store and take it in for them to fix. (it should be fairly inexpensive).

Good luck.

Hi,
There's nothing much you can do at this stage apart from get another keyboard with a function key and try to switch screens, other than that you could check the inverter board & connections there.

Remove the screen bezel, At the bottom of the screen you will see an elongated piece of circuit board with wires coming from either end covered by frosted plastic.
That is the inverter, check the connections on the inverter (both sides) and power the laptop up to check the display, to remove it gently pull the plugs from each end and remove the screw from the middle and pull the board away.
Look on the back of the inverter itself for a copper coil, if you re-solder the solder points around the coil you may find it works again as components that suffer from extreme heat the solder joints dry causing bad connections, re-floating the solder solves the problem in 90% of cases.

Good luck.

Hook up an external monitor to determine if you have a logic board or LCD problem If the external monitor works the trouble is with the display or its cables. You should also double check that your memory is properly installed and you may want to replace your bios battery. you will need to aquire a toshiba manual for your laptop to help you fix these issues. here is the link for finding your manual Search

faulty backlights mean that you need to actually need to replace the laptops screen. Unfortunately, unlike phones and desktop screens. Laptops have to either be sent in for repair or replaced. Toshiba's laptop PC's always have a habit of doing this.

Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5518 show black screen

Most probably one of two problems causing this:

1. Replacement screen has bad LED diode (not likely the problem).

2. Either you didn't get cable securely attached to replacement screen or (more likely) the other end of the cable detached from the motherboard when the computer fell and the original screen broke. I recommend carefully rechecking both ends of the cable connection.

Why is my toshiba satellite c655d-s5200 screen is black and i can faintly see

Okay. Got a bright flashlight, and some tape?

OH I'M JUST KIDDING!

Primer;
An LCD screen cannot produce light by itself. It needs an additional light source.
A Backlight is the additional light source.

A Backlight can be a CCFL, or a series of LED's.
Light Emitting Diode.

A CCFL is a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.
Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.

[Average thickness is 2mm. That is a little larger than 1/16th of an Inch. Average length is almost as long, as the LCD screen is in height,

http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2007/12/09/replace-laptop-backlight-ccfl-lamp/

A screen Inverter converts the power from the laptop, for the LCD screen.

The Toshiba Satellite C655d-s5200 uses LED's for the Backlight, and No screen Inverter,

http://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/Toshiba/SATELLITE~C655D-S5200/

Which narrows your problem down to two possibilities;
A) Problem with the video cable
B) Problem with the LCD screen.

I state LCD screen, because you won't be replacing the LED backlighting. You have to buy the entire LCD screen assembly, as shown in one example above.

(Example is shown for reference, not advertising. You may find a better deal from a reputable dealer, also)

Video Cable:
The Video Cable is attached to the motherboard, under right about at the number 6 key, on the Keyboard.

It then goes across to the Left Hinge, and up into the Display Assembly.
From there it goes to the back of the LCD screen.

From everyday normal opening, and closing of the laptop over time, the video cable may become pinched, and pulled on.
This can create a loose connection at the motherboard side, and/or LCD screen side.

It can also cause damage to the video cable. If the sheath of the video cable shows visual apparent signs of damage, the wires inside may be damaged also. (Stretched/Broken)

Laptop off, ALL power removed, (AC adapter {Charger}, and Battery), I suggest checking the motherboard side connection first.

A visual inspection will Not do. You need to physically see, if you can plug the motherboard side plug of the video cable, into the connector on the motherboard.

A loose connection that is not apparent to the ***** eye, is all it takes to have a problem.

You can click on any photo to enlarge,

http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Satellite-C650-C655/disassemble-toshiba-laptop-1.htm

http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Satellite-C650-C655/disassemble-toshiba-laptop-2.htm

http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Satellite-C650-C655/disassemble-toshiba-laptop-3.htm

Stop on Step 22. Access to the motherboard side of the video cable.

A word on the Keyboard Cable, and it's connector on the motherboard; (Steps 9, 10, and 11),

The Keyboard Cable stays with the Keyboard. It removes from the motherboard connector. The Keyboard Cable has NO plug, or connector on the motherboard end.

The Keyboard Cable is a FFC. Flat Flex Cable.
It has flat gold plated contact strips on the motherboard end.

The motherboard connector is a ZIF connector. Zero Insertion Force.
In Step 11 you can plainly see this connector.
Has a large white rectangular BODY on bottom.
The smaller rectangular shaped piece on top is the Locking Bar.

The Locking Bar does NOT completely remove from the Body.
If it does it is broken, and means motherboard replacement.
Hence why I am being so detailed.

I am sure you use great finesse, but wanted to advise you in advance of the 'danger'.

The Locking Bar is moved towards the LCD screen, and as advised about 1 millimeter. ( -> O <-)
There are Tabs on the Locking Bar. One on each side. Usual procedure is to use your thumbnails on these Tabs, and ease the Locking Bar forward.

Now gently tug on the Keyboard Cable. You may have to gently move it side, to side, to break the Keyboard Cable loose. They sometimes get stuck over time.

Pretty stiff? Better check to see if you have the Locking Bar fully unlocked.
The Keyboard Cable MUST go back in the same position, and through the same plastic Latches and Channels.

(As do all the cables, or you may pinch them, and also will not be able to get the laptop back together correctly again)

Make a mark on one side of the cable, (Away from the gold plated flat contact strips), and a matching mark on the ZIF connector of the motherboard, if you need to.

You can slip the Keyboard Cable back in, Ram Memory, DVD drive, and Battery, and reconnect the AC adapter, to see if this was the problem.

Still no?
Check the LCD screen side connector of the video cable. Is it tight?

http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Satellite-A665-A665D-A660-A660D/remove-replace-lcd-screen.htm

LCD screen connected, turn the laptop on.
Was this the problem?
No?

Even if there are no apparent signs of damage, you may wish to take the video cable down to the nearest 'Mom and pop' computer store, and ask them to check it for continuity. This way you can see if any wires are broken inside. (Labor charge may be free to $5)

(My thinking is if you go to a large computer repair shop, they are going to want to repair the laptop, or sell you an LCD screen, or a new laptop. "Oh that old thing? For 2995 I can put you in the seat of this baby!" )

Or since the video cable is very economical, you may wish to just replace it.
Just one example from a quick search,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Toshiba-Satellite-C655D-6017B0265601-LCD-Video-Cable-Genuine-OEM-Laptop-Tested-/290753862740?pt=US_Video_Cables_Adapters&hash=item43b247dc54

[Black end on right is motherboard side, gold colored end on left is LCD screen side ]

Video Cable ruled out your problem is the LCD screen, or to be more specific, the LED backlighting.
Replace the LCD screen.

My toshiba laptop will boot when I power up but the screen stays black

Jeff, connect an external monitor for a diagnostic test.

Laptop OFF, monitor OFF, connect a VGA monitor to the VGA port on the back of the laptop,
(RGB/Monitor connector,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector )

The external/VGA monitor can be a CRT type (Looks like a small TV), or a flat LCD screen that has a VGA cable.

Turn the external monitor on. If a CRT type allow it to warm up.
Turn the laptop on.

By default the display should show on the external monitor. If not press, and hold down on the Fn key, and tap the F5 key. (One of the Hot Key's)

If the display still does not show, hold down on the Fn key, and tap the F5 key again.
There are three display options;

1) Internal monitor of laptop ONLY
2) Internal monitor of laptop AND external monitor
3) External monitor ONLY

If graphics show on the external monitor, you have a problem in the Display Assembly, and/or the Video Cable.

If graphics do Not show on the external monitor, you have a problem with the graphics chipset on the motherboard.
(ATI Radeon 3100)

http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Satellite-Pro-L450-L455/laptop-disassembly-1.htm

Video Cable
1) Could be the connections. The connection of the video cable TO the motherboard, and the other end of the video cable TO the back of the LCD screen. (In the Display Assembly)

2) Could be damage to the video cable. Check the sheath of the cable for obvious signs of damage. If so, the thin tiny wires inside may be damaged also.

Cable should be checked for continuity of each wire in the cable. (Ohm's with a multimeter)

Video Cable condition, and tightness of connections check out, it's on to the screen Inverter.

Primer:
An LCD screen does not produce light by itself. It needs an additional light source.
A Backlight is the additional light source.

A Backlight is a CCFL, or a series of LED lights.

The Toshiba Satellite L455D-S5976 Notebook PC, uses 1 single CCFL for a Backlight.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.

Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.

A screen Inverter is used to convert the power (Electricity) from the laptop, for the LCD screen, and Backlight.

90 PERCENT OF THE TIME the fault is the Inverter.

The screen Inverter is a small rectangular circuit board, and is located behind the Display Bezel, an at the bottom of the LCD screen,

Example of screen Inverter,

Satellite A10. (A10 is in blue)
In this 'paragraph' go down to the third line, and scroll across to -
L450D, in blue.
Click on L450D.

This is a PDF file. The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.
After you click on the file name { L450D } it may take up to 30 seconds before the first page comes up.

Sounds like your LCD is faulty, if it works with another external monitor, then that is normally the problem.
You will need to change your LCD to correct this problem.

Screen is black. Power button lights up, fans and DVD seem to work.

hi there,

What you are experiencing with your laptop is "POST" (Power-on self test) issue. Here are some steps which you can try.

- Remove the battery and ac adapter (as well as external peripherals attached), press the power button for atleast 15 seconds, try to power on your computer again.
- If you have external monitor, hook it up. Display on the external monitor would mean that you have a LCD issue (check LCD cable, LCD inverter and LCD backlight in this case). No display on the external monitor would mean that you need to replace the video card (if dedicated) or replace the whole system board (if integrated).
- Try to reseat or replace the memory module as well, it might help.

I can barely see the screen, its very dark. Its a toshiba satellite m115 s1061

Try attaching an external monitor to the laptop & see if you could get any display on it. If this is successful, then you might have either a faulty LCD cable or screen inverter board.
The LCD cable transfers data signal from the motherboard & video card to the LCD screen. It also supplies high voltage DC power to the screen inverter board. The screen inverter board works as a power supply for the backlight lamp mounted inside the LCD screen. It converts low voltage DC power to high voltage AC power needed for the backlight lamp.
