Not sure what model of Maytag I have, but it is dispensing Fabric softener at the wrong time (too late?) so I have softener stains on my clothes.
Is there a clog, or is this mechanical, like a switch is not working and it's timing is "off"?
Stupid question. How do I clean the dispenser. Is there a solvent I can use to clean the wax...like alcohol? Do I run an emply wash cyle with cleaner in the softener dispenser?Stupid question. Thank you so much! I will pop it off and give it a good cleaning. It is the type that sits on top of the agitator.Thank you so much! I will pop it off and give it a good cleaning. It is the type that sits on top of the agitator.

Fabric softener is mostly a liquid wax. It is common for dispensers to have problems if the you use liquid fabric softener a lot. The softener becomes a sticky solid and can gunk up everything over time. I believe the type of dispenser on your washer simply flushes water into the reservoir at a prescribed time and then dispenses into the wash tub. If this reservoir becomes clogged somewhere it may actually be filling up and overflowing into another reservoir in the dispenser and getting dispensed that way. I would try cleaning the dispenser thoroughly, first. Since it IS dispensing (but at the wring time) I don't think you have a control problem. Try cleaning and let me know if this helps.
PS Sorry to ignore your request for online assistance. I was already in the middle of typing a solution for you. I hope this was the help you needed.
Flushing the dispenser with hot water should be sufficient to remove some residue. However, if the dispenser is really gunked up, you may have to remove it and let it soak in the some hot water to dissolve everything completely. I don't think vinegar and alcohol would do much good. Please check that you added the softener to the correct compartment of your washer. Also, please read or re-read the instructions for adding the fabric softener. Once you've done those 2 things, please run a test wash with clothes that you would not particular care about potentially staining. Thank you.
I have the exact same problem, Speed Queen washer, top loader. The machine still has some fabric softener in the cup, but the more irritating problem is the puddle of softener underneath the finished load. I had bought a SQ because they seemed old school and I thought it would mean problems would be simpler to repair.
I just had this problem with our 5 year old Atlantis. The key I found was to lift the fabric despenser off. Then you will need to clean it really well. It get builfd up of the Fabirc softner over time. You wil also need to clean the interior of the agitator which will be easy after you have the dispenser off. I used a flat head crew driver and light scraped all the "Gunk" off the inside of the agitator. Take your time and get it as clean as possible all the way down to the bolt that hold the agitiator on. After you are all clean run a hot water load and disefect with a bit of bleach in the dispenser. Put the agitator back on and it should be solved. You will be amazed and possibly grossed out at how much stuff you clean out of it.
The machine needs to cut you a break; “”i have a maytag neptune TL and there are several things wrong with it...1. I can't wash small loads it will stop at the spin cycle and flash dc”” This issue is a clutch issue see this post to DIY the repair. “”it will wash fine on regular loads until it comes to spin cycle again and it will stop and flash nf”” This one is a little confusing the “nf” error is a No water fill error code.Check these two post for support regarding water inlet restriction or valve not opening properly. nf postnf post 2 “”my fabric softener dispenser will not let the softener out neither will the bleach dispenser”” See this fabric softer post for support. The fabric softener dispenser may be clogged or the water dispenser valves feeding both dispensers may not be operating properly. The Service Manual on page 16 “Board Output Test” will give you support to turn on the Fabric Softener Valve and Bleach valve.See if you hear the valves operate in Service Mode” My method may seem a little confusion for viewing water flow to the dispensers. This issue could be associated to the nf error you are receiving, restricted water flow (inlet screen clog) or cold water valve not working properly. Post back for any questions or possible support I can offer.I’m an owner like you not a repair person but I’m very comfortable working on this machine.Rich
If the model number you have this listed under is correct, you should have the softener dispenser on the center post of the agitator. If this is the case, you need to remove it by popping it off the center post and take it apart. Soak it in some hot water to dissolve the softener residue and reassemble. Most dispenser related problems are attributed to softener that hardens and clogs up the dispenser. Liquid softener is essentially a wax and will do this over time. You will need to clean it from time to time.
Dispenser wholes are probably clogged and all the softener is not dumping when it is supposed to!. Top loaders usually have a little cup like place to add the softener in the top of the agitator! Those the Manuel tells you to rinse with water occasionally!
If you can't figure it out, call service and get it done and over! You will feel better!!!

The fabric softener dispenser is notorious for clogging. Liquid fabric softener is essentially a liquid form of wax. After a period of time it begins to gunk up the inside of the fabric softener dispenser. If you remove the dispenser drawer and look into the cavity, there should be a series of holes in the upper part of the compartment where water sprays into all the dispenser trays. These holes get gunked up and clogged and water will not dispense properly. As a result, the washer goes through a complete cycle, but the dispenser stays full. If this is the case, you can take some cotton swabs and/or toothpicks and clean these holes real good. It may be a bit meticulous, but it should take care of the problem. Post back and let me know if this helps.
Fabric softener dispensers are notorious for getting all gummed up and clogged. Remove the dispenser cup and soak in some hot water to dissolve all residue. While you have the dispenser removed check under the dispenser cap in the agitator for gummy residue as well. Clean with hot water. There should also be an agitator seal cap under the dispenser. Make sure the cap and rubber o-ring are seated properly. Last of all, if the dispenser has a cone shaped cup inside, make sure it is inserted cone-side UP. The cup is designed to allow fabric softener to roll down the sides of it, NOT hold it. I hope this helps.
