don't keep running it until you replace the fan. Look for one on ebay or around the web. It is shutting down because of heat. A $20 fan could cost you your whole laptop if you keep running it.

2 possible solutions to this
1. Use the roll back function of your operating system to roll back to the last back up.
2. Insert your restore disk or Windows disk and do a format/clean install.
If you have a restore disc it will have prompts to "restore" your system and give you a warning about losing data-save off what you want BEFORE doing this restore
If you have standard windows disk you may want to use the format utility in windows first to clean the drive and do a fresh install.
Once installed don't forget to download updates and back up and then reload your other software.

1.Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD drive, and then restart the computer.
2.Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD drive if you are prompted.
3.When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
4.Press 1 (One) to select windows XP and then hit enter.
5.When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
6.At the command prompt, Type Bootrec /RebuildBcd and then press ENTER.
7.If the Bootrec.exe tool runs successfully, it presents you with an installation path of a Windows directory. To add the entry to the BCD store, type yes.
