Engine overspeed light blinking

I see the light, what do I do about it? Generator won't even attempt to crank. Battery is good. Just changed the oil and coolant.

    Hey there. I have the same problem, although overspeed light is not blinking, just lights up when engine tries to start up.

    It's a Perkins 4008TAG2 engine of an ABB genset. Any ideas?

Hi there,
You probably have a broken magnetic pickup.
You'll have to reset the generator controller, usually this is just a matter of turning the switch of the off position. On most of the generators I've worked on a blinking overspeed light as opposed to a solid one means that the control board can't detect any speed input. Speed input can be either a wire that comes from the generator output, or a magnetic pickup mounted so that it can count flywheel teeth. You don't say which generator this is so I can't guess any better than that.
Regards,
Carl

Onan 5500 marque gold turns over but, won't start. fault code is 32 but, batteries ok, air cleaner ok, fuel pumping, oil changed, won't start

Code 32 is a low cranking speed sense. You didn't mention a Spec # which would help. You say batteries are ok, but the generator is not getting enough cranking amps or voltage to maintain the control properly. Check, battery voltage, wiring, any in line isolation solenoids, check generator solenoid, also make sure there is no mechanical binding on the generator, a good way to do that is remove the spark plugs DISCONNECT THE BATTERY to prevent starting, underneath where the air intake is under the alternator is a plastic plug, remove that and you can put a socket I believe 3/4" up onto the alternator shaft and rotate the engine, if it tuns freely there is no binding, if you feel it is hard to move, check the drive train, belts, pulleys underneath (A lot of work, best to take to a dealer if it is mechanically bound)

Shuts off by itself used only 20 hrs and i did change oil as instructed and the oil is full I was told it may be low oil shut off switch was bad even if it is brand new unit

To be sure that the oil level switch is good or not, try the following:
  • Find the switch terminals;
  • First disconnect one wire (if more than one) and try to crank the motor;
  • If the previous attempt was not successful, connect the wires together (if two wires) or the wire to ground (if one wire). Try cranking again.
If one attempt was successful, then the sensor is bad or wrong connected.
 If no attempt was successful, then the sensor may be good. Than check the fuel supply system.

Briggs and straton 18k home generator cranks fine and runs for about 15 seconds and then immediately shuts down. It is hoodked into the house power panel and has worked perfectly for two years. It is on a...

If you're sure it isn't a fuel issue, also check these things:

The engine oil - it could be low on oil and shutting down on low oil pressure

If water cooled, check the coolant level. Same thing - the engine may have a low coolant sensor.

Make sure the unit isn't overloaded.

If it has overspeed control check to see if the engine is running unusually fast when it does run.

Generac 43903 standby Generator overspeed indicator on starting

I have a generator that did the same thing. It would start and then stop within a few seconds. The more expensive generators have an oil level safety switch to prevent the engine from burning up. There is usually a wire connecting to the switch on the outside of the engine near the oil fill hole. Remove this wire and try to start the generator. If it runs without a problem then it is the switch. You need to remove the switch and take it apart carefully and clean it. There is a small float inside the assembly. When the oil runs low the float allows the switch to short to ground which kills the spark to the spark plug. Hope that helps.

10kw Generac shut down overspeed

Make sure that the throttle linkage is all there and not damaged/misadjusted, then get a manometer and check your inlet gas pressure. Gas pressure should be 8 inches of water column and stay there running or not.
