I'm finding that any amount of fabric bulk will not be advanced forward, especially at the start of the material. I have to pull the fabric(holding the fabric behind the machine and pulling slightly) past the bulkiest part and then it sews fine. Also, I cannot seem to make a button hole on a bulky fabric. Should I change needles? Presser foot?

Hi Jodyk...Remove your flatbed so you can access your bobbin area. Open the cover of the bobbin area. The shiny/bright components consist of the Bobbin, which snaps into the Shuttle Hook, which is contained in the Race. Immediately right of the Race is a pewter/matte silver colored lever. Press the lower portion of the lever to raise the Feed Dogs. Pressing the upper portion drops the Feed Dogs, and is commonly used to accomplish free-hand applique work......good luck my friend.
SOURCE: i have a very old viking - feed dog problem
The older 6XXX series are the best machines Viking ever made. But they have one flaw - if the button hole mechanism is not regularly serviced and used, it will eventually stick and the machine will only sew in reverse. This can also happen if you turn the knob backwards when in button hole mode.
I always tell my customers to make a few button holes every time they use the machine. This helps to keep the mechanism free and working between servicing.
Unfortunately the fix is not a DIY consumer project. It requires knowledge and expertise in disassembling the machine and re-aligning the parts. Expect to pay anywhere from $25 to $75 in addition to the regular servicing fee.

The little white button on the lower right front of the machine is the button that drops the feed teeth. If it is pressed in the feed teeth are down, push in a lift upward to be sure it's in the "Up" position. Then look on the left side of the machine, you'll see a dial, (NOT the dial facing you as you sit in front of the machine) make sure the red dot on the dial is lined up with the red dot on the painted part of the machine.
Finally look at the dial on the front of the machine. The one with the little button in the center of it. Put it on the number 3. If your machine doesn't feed fabric after doing what I've outlined then you need to take it in for service.

Thanks sylviaivie. I didn't change the stitch length from what is automatically chosen by the machine but it makes sense to lengthen the stitch. I'll try that. I don't have a walking foot but since I sew a lot of bulky fabric, it would be a good idea to have one. Both very good suggestions, thank you! I'll post back when I've tried them.
