Dual Boot HAD a dual boot system. reloaded OS1-Cdrive and now it won't dual boot--------OS2 is D drive. How can I get dual boot option at startup again?

Both OS's are WinXPPro. Would rather not load OS2 if possible for different reasons.

Thanks Chuck for you information. Unfortunately, in the default operating system list, OS2 (D) isn't showing up so I can't choose it to be the system I want to start with.
As far as editing the boot options file, both OS's are the same however in the default OS, it doesn't show any drive letter although it is C drive. Never worked with notepad and if the 2nd OS (D) isn't ever there, not sure how I would copy and paste with a changed drive letter.

    So try this:
Use the previous instructions to edit boot.ini.
If your other OS is on a separate drive, change the rdisk(0) to rdisk(1) for the other OS. So the final boot.ini file might look something like this...

    [boot loader]
    timeout=5
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="XP OS1" /fastdetect
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="XP on Drive D" /fastdetect

Sorry Chuck, haven't tried your suggestion yet. I've heard when you start messing with the boot. ini., it can screw up your puter so am waiting til I have time to work on that problem in case I screw things up lol. I'll let you know how it works out though and thanks again.

You may have overwritten your boot.ini file.

  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
  • On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
  • Under System startup, in the Default operating system list, click the operating system that you want to start when you turn on or restart your computer.
  • Select the Display list of operating systems for check box, and then type the number of seconds for which you want the list displayed before the default operating system starts automatically.

To manually edit the boot options file, click Edit. Microsoft strongly recommends that you do not modify the boot options file (Boot.ini), because doing so may render your computer unusable.

If both OS's are the same, you should be able to copy and paste the line for XP and simply change the drive letter to the location of the second OS.

SOURCE: dual booting

Boot to Vista. Then

  • right-click "my computer", then "properties".
  • click the "Advanced" section (Vista: on the left side bar).
  • In the section that says "Startup and Recovery", click "settings".
  • Under "Default operating system", choose "Windows Vista".
  • REMOVE the checks next to "Time to display list of..." and "Time to display recovery options..."
  • click ok to everything.
Now you will need to remove Windows XP.
IMPORTANT: for the next step make sure you boot to Windows Vista. Otherwise you could corrupt your computer.
  • Go to "Start", "Control Panel"
  • Open "Administrative Tools"
  • next, open "Computer Management".
  • On the left, there's a side bar. Under "Storage", click "Disk Management".

  • Now, If windows XP is on drive C:\,
right click C:\ and select "Format"
  • Click "OK".
hope this helps.

SOURCE: Dual Boot XP 32 and XP 64 on different PHYSICAL drives on same PC

So you want to merge those to make it as dual boot system on one harddrive, right? Try these steps:

1. Go to start, control panel
2. Performance and Maintenance
3. Administrative Tools
4. Computer Management -> expand storage, click Disk Management
5. Right Click the drive containing XP32 that you want to use, click format... Choose NTFS then make it as Extended Partition.
6. Reboot your computer and try to see by Pressing F8 if there's an option of what operating system you are going to use.

*Drop me a comment if that works or not so I can assist you further.

SOURCE: I need to setup a dual boot computer. I have 2

Do you have both operating systems installed seperatly ? In case of installing another operating system while one is present, the computer would've known to select the one of it by itself or through some menus while startup. If you have installed both operating system seperately than you may need to find out first that both operating system are able to boot with some menu choice from the startup. To dual boot computer one system has to set as primary while other as extended partition using some Harddisk utility like FDISK. If you need to reset the partitions make sure that both systems works together as dual boot. Win XP, Win98 works as dual boot, WINXP , LINUX works together , but WIX 95 and WIN 98 may not work for dual boot systems.

How to remove Multiboot Option in Windows

If under various circumstances you had to install a second Windows OS on the same system, you should have already met the dual boot option. It will pop up before booting the system permitting the user to select which OS will boot.

Boot.ini, the house of the dual boot option Boot.ini is a system file found in the system root. Because it has a major importance for the booting process.so we have to edit this boot.ini file to remove multiboot popups.

How to edit Boot.ini

1.Go to Start Click on Run
2.Type msconfig.

Once the system configuration window pops up, you will notice that Boot.ini has its own tab. Select that tab and where you see "timeout," set it to a lower or higher value. Remove/Add Operating Systems in the dual boot menuThis is the main issue.

Step 1:Right click on My Computer icon and select Properties.

Step 2:From the properties window go to Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings.

Here, you can both edit the timeout value and modify the Boot.ini file by clicking Edit. If you remove the second operating system from Boot.ini, the dual boot option won't appear before booting.

I have a hard drive with Win 7 with programs, etc. I also have, installed, a hard drive with Win xp, No programs. I want the "Dual Boot" option on startup so that I can choose either option...

Hi,

To dual boot you must partition your hard drive into two partitions and load operating systems on both partitions. I don't think you want to do this. Go to tigerdirect.com and look for a device called a TRIOS. Trios is an IDE hard drive disk selector device, which can be placed into a PC's 5.25-inch bay, that enables end users to boot easily from a choice of up to three different or same operating systems on "three separate hard drives". Simple to install, and just as easy to use

Is it possible to install windows xp 2 when there is already windows 7 is installed.i want to install both os running in my dell vostro 1015 laptop,

Yes you will have to format your drive and remove partitions, then create new partitions and add a boot up option menu. Then when you power on your computer it will ask if you want to boot Windows 7, or Windows XP. You will have to have both copies of Windows also your restore partition can't do this.

I need to setup a dual boot computer. I have 2 hard drives each has an os I need the option to select at startup

Try Install KDE on your desktop, I think its much better than gnome for booting setup. There's another way which one you'd like to booth by striking the F8 key repeatedly on the restart or starting your PC and select the drive which drive you like to boot.Or you can configure it on your bios setup by hitting the del key and configure your boot priority.
