Windows likes to mess with drive letters. Sometimes if you've plugged in another u.s.b. device, Windows will mis-assign the drive letter. Try this:

  1. Log on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
  2. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Performance and Maintenance.

Note If you do not see Performance and Maintenance, go to step 3. Performance and Maintenance appears in Control Panel only if you use Category view. If you use Classic view, Performance and Maintenance does not appear.
  3. Click Administrative Tools, double-click Computer Management, and then click Disk Management in the left pane.
  4. Right-click the drive, the partition, the logical drive, or the volume that you want to assign a drive letter to, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.
  5. Click Add.
  6. Click Assign the following drive letter if it is not already selected, and then either accept the default drive letter or click the drive letter that you want to use.
  7. Click OK.
I'm pretty sure this will fix the problem. If not try us again at Fixya.com

Won't link to my computer and flashing red light inside.

Is this a new one or have you used it for some time? If it is a new one, it might not be getting enough power to work.
If you connect it through a USB hub, disconnect the hub. Connect the HDD directly to the computer and see.
If it doesn't work, find a USB cable with two USB jacks on one side. Connect both to USB ports at the back of the computer (and of course, connect the other end to the HDD) and see.

Best of luck!

Hello there...

Looks like your HDD is having mechanical problem, this could happen due to a shock (dropped or bumped maybe?) which can cause your HDD I/O head loose from its track.

My advice is start backup you important data when you can access you HDD and prepare a HDD replacement.

hope that helps... :D

Is my LaCie External USB 2.0 500GB fried/dead???

You're not missing any step at all, because with SATA hard drive if its really working your computer should
automatically detect it and since this hard drive suddenly stop working there's a possibility that its already
fried but if you want you can try this hard drive again to a different computer and if still not detected by
second computer its already dead.........

Simpletech 500 gig usb plug in hard drive

Is the drive running when connecto to power ans PC?
Try it on another PC.
Check the power supply if it is operated from an external power supply.
It it is self powered via the USB then this is a possible problem- the PC power supply cannot cope - Removing other USB devices may help here
