The external drive should now come up, d: or e: or f: or h: or whatever! Hope this helps.

My dell computer with windows 7 will not recognize my device - tried it on an apple and found 2 files but could not open - said corrupt and unreadable? how to I retrieve my photos and docuements?

run a virus scan on the device (from a good licensed antivirus company and a windows machine recommended) then later go to folder options and untick 'hide hidden items' and 'hide system extensions' options (basically untick all options related to hidden files and folders and say yes when prompted). your data is there do not format.

My SimpleTech 320GB external hard drive turns off and on randomly

The hard drive has an intermittent problem, the issue lies in the circuit board not the hardware, if the board can be accessed there may be a chance that a soldering iron touch up may solve the problem. But as a rule they are not made to be serviced.

Simpletech 320GB BOM No.: 96300-41001-012 is new has never worked

The original power supply is "SB2D-020-1HA SIMPLETECH AC ADAPTER 12V 1.5A FOR EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE" . Just find a replacement with the correct size plug (center positive) that supplies 12v DC at 1.5amps (1500ma)

Can't find simpletech on my computer - it was there, but it could not let me open it and would not shut off with the eject button to remove. Now my computer doesn't recognize it at all

You can try going in the add / remove and uninstalling the program, then go into devices and remove from there as well. Also go to the folder it is still listed in and find the uninstall there. Delete all those to your recycle bin. Reboot twice! Then on the 2nd reboot, plug the external in and make sure it has power and is turned on. See if it reappears again. On another site, this next bit is what someone else tried (the last one), see if that works for you. Storage forum Simpledrive 1TB External HDD Problem

How do I ID and # photos on already onmy SimpleTech

select the ones in the same folder and highlight them with your mouse Hold down your cntrl key and right click the first image. If all the images are the same category then rename the right clicked image, what ever you want it to be. Once you have renamed the one, all the highlighted ones will be renamed the same with the difference being, all the other images will have a number added to it in sequence.

Why do I get a clicking sound from my external hardrive?

My Seagate 1TB started doing the same thing before it died. My brother managed to get it working again long enough for me to move all of the files to a Toshiba 1TB solid state external drive. A couple of nice features to the Toshiba are that there is no power adapter (powered by the USB), there are no moving parts, and it is very compact. I slid mine into the space under the laptop stand. You might want to back up all of your data to another location just in case yours is getting ready to die.

Defragment/clean-up external HD

Hello Anonymous Make sure you have backed up all the files you need to keep. Store them on the computer if you have the space... until you put them back on the clean Hard Drive. Your drive would be seven years old now. So... it would be a wise move to do a security type format to test the drives integrity before you loose your backups. Many Drives don't last seven years... 320GB is also pretty small these days. Suggest you use the old drive for eg. "Movies" and buy a new Hard Drive for your Backups as this drive may fail at any time. Murphy's Law says that will be when you need it the most! A 3.5 inch Drive (uses 5v&12v) and is more robust & faster than your 2.5" pocket type drives that run on 5 volts only. Also, look for a USB 3 or FireWire Port connector as these will ensure compatibility & speed on future computers. USB 1&2 are slow on large files. DeFragging only shuffles the empty space around. Lining it up sequentially so that it's faster at accessing the data. Re Formatting wipes the directory off the drive making it appear that you have a new clean drive. Previous files then get overwritten. Do a security erase if you want to clean all data from the drive & test the drive for faults. This will return all available space available to you as an empty drive. On a Mac, use Disk Utility. Choose Fat32 to allow interchangeability with Mac <> PC or "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" for Mac Bootable Disks. On a PC use Disk Management for a quick format to Fat32 or NTFS for Windows Boot. Or See Here for full details: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/tipstricks/f/format-hard-drive.htm Drives are so inexpensive these days. You can pick up a 1Terrabyte drive for $99 here. Format & test the drive before putting it to use on your computer. This will be one of the few times you will get to test & experiment with the drive before you put your data on it. You can always use a USB Memory Stick as a pretend Hard Drive to experiment with & test the formatting procedure. They use the same Partition & Format utilities as a regular Hard Drive.
