If the drive is brand new, then it is likely that it needs to be formatted. If it is an old drive you have used before, then it is highly likely that the drive has failed. I suggest you format the drive and see if that helps.

Pc suddenly requires my western digital to be formatted
The drive is likely failing; Windows is unable to located a boot record for the drive and therefore it wants to format it in order to continue; trying it on a 2nd pc confirms this.
It may be possible to use a utility such as Data Doctor's Data Recovery to recover the data but it's going to cost some $$.
You can check out the utility at
http://www.software.com/view/8432/0/data-doctor-windows-data-recovery-software
I've used this in the past to recover data from drives that were overwritten; and to undelete files that were lost when someone accidently deleted a user's windows profile.
Hope this helps! good luck!
Error code 43
Code 43 is almost ALWAYS a driver problem, not necessarily an external driver, it could even be one of Windows' own. There is a well-written (in my opinion) page at
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/errorc/a/code-43-error.htm which discusses the error and how to fix it in simple, step-by-step fashion.
Code 43 errors can be frustrating and time consuming to troubleshoot, but take you time, work it step by step, and best of luck to you.
Wiping WD hard drive
I suggest that you use Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN")application to completely Esare the Hard Drive. It is a freeware application.
Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN") is a self-contained boot disk that
securely wipes the hard disks of most computers. DBAN will
automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that
it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or
emergency data destruction.

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Portable hard drive says its write protected
Have you set the "Ownership" or "File Permission" of your portable hard drive? Most of the time, this approach should work for you.
You might also need to tweak your registry. Link below will allow you to Enable Read-Write access to your USB storage devices.
Download and import this registry file, then restart your computer for it to take effect.
USB_Enable_Read-Write.reg
REMOVE WRITE PROTECTION FROM EXTERNAL DRIVE
I'm pretty sure that your problem isn't in the sticks...If that was your question. google 'HP USB Format' They put out a nifty little tool that works on most USB flash drives.
Shows up as "Initio Combo Device Class" not a "Disk Drive"
RESOLVED the ISSUE...!! Hi, Yesterday I get into similar problem of having my USB Drive ( WD passport Elite 320gb ) not being detected by my PC and as soon as I connect to it, Initio Combo device class drivers gets loaded and Drive do not show up in the device list...!! I tried several options.1. Freezed my hard drive for 12 hrs in the freezer. It did not help me today.2. I have opened the USB drive shell ( becareful, I have damaged it.. see the instructions before you try t ). You can find the 2.5' HDD inside and there will be SATA to USB bridge adapter. I was having doubt on this bridge unit as I read through several blogs.3. luckily I have a unused 2.5' Laptop HDD. So I have removed this bridge unit carefully and tried to connect to my HDD. If the bridge is good, my HDD must be detected right away..But it is the same problem.. It did not work.. Hence I have confirmed that it is the bridge problem..4. I bought a Rs. 250/- ( 5$ ) 2.5 SATA casing that is available in the market to use the 2.5' SATA HDD through USB. ( actually I do not know where I can buy only the bridge..hence bought the entire unit..which is still cheaper )5. From the new unit, I have the USB to SATA bridge, which I have connected to my WD HDD SATA USB hard drive... Bingo.........It is detected by OS and I have started copying my important data immediately... 6. This Unit comes with a casing ..hence you may continue using this case... But some units may not fit well..still the bridge is usable..!! I GOT all my data..with just Rs.250/- ( $5 ) ..I am happy to try this on my own..!! Good luck with your drive..!!
