Can only get freezer to work when quick freeze is turned on

SOURCE: Neff 3.8 cu ft freezer.

if it works on superfreeze then the stat is faulty. all that supoerfreeze does is to bypass the stat. easy job

You probably have a defective thermostat or sensor for reading the temperature.

SOURCE: We have a 20.3 cubic feet Kenmore upright frost

This sounds like a bad thermostadt, since the quick freeze button does work. But it should be much colder than 32 degrees. It may also be the motor, since it runs for brief periods of time after plugging it back in.

I'd say best bet here is to call a repairman. (sorry...)
