I have a 36" Sony (KV-36HS500) that usually has a crystal clear picture, however, lately I'm getting a faint vertical line that continually rolls across the screen in the background. It's more pronounced when the screen background is dark. I have observed it while playing DVD's and while watching satellite TV, so I'm pretty sure it's the TV.
Any clues as to what this could be?

Hi,
Based on your post/description, it would seem to be AC hum riding into the video input signal. Initially, a couple of ideas you could try:
If all else fails, it may be necessary to open the Sony and perform diagnosis. This of course would require a fair familiarity of electronic components/circuitry and safety procedures, use of a DVM and a soldering iron. It would be to your added advantage access to a service manual or at the very least a schematic diagram with voltage readings. Should you be uncomfortable performing a DIY (do-it-yourself), perhaps your best bet would then be to seek the services of a qualified professional.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
If Capacitors C6590 and / or C6503 (1200MF 250V) got leaky in power supply board this noise bar appear on screen. If you have know-how of tv repair, please check above said capacitors.

the lines being present during video playback only also means the
problem is likely in the "jungle chip" as previously reported. The
fact that it shows up only when in video input will make it easier for
the tech to locate the problem, so be sure and tell them this is the
case when you describe the problem.
You may get lucky and find that it is a simple capacitor that is going
bad for which the replacement cost is only a few dollars, but don't bet
on it. More likely a major chip will need replaced or a board for
which the cost will be as stated.

Thanks! I will try grounding the satellite coaxial through the power strip and let you know if that works.
I tried grounding the satellite coaxial via the power strip, as suggested, but the problem still persists.
