Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

My Hard Drive makes a Clicking Sound

Hello

This is a tip explaining what exactly you should do when your Hard drive(Internal/External) makes a Clicking sound.

I should start by saying that if your drive gets to the point that is start making this sound, it might just be too late to start action, but, we might still have something you can do.

Symptoms of this clicking noise includes the fact that the drive is not picked up by your computer at all. Another symptom is that the drive will crash frequently, hence crashing your computer. If you have experienced one of these symptoms you can to the right place.

Causes:

This specific error mostly occurs in portable drives(External) due to fact that that dropping the drive is more probable. If the drive is dropped, the spindle inside the drive will be damaged. hence the clicking noise.

The above mentioned is not the only cause, this problem can be bought on by other factors as well.

Suggestion:

If you are so fortunate that the drive actually picks up and shows on your operating system, the first step will be to backup all the data on the "faulty" drive you would like to save.

If you are unsure on how to backup data, Click HERE for step by step instructions. After the backup is done, you will need to get rid of the faulty drive, because it will be useless.

If the drive does not get picked up by the computer, you will unfortunately need to send the drive in for Data recovery. The tariffs for data recovery is as follow.

250GB - $150
500GB - $300
1TB - $500

I hope this tip can shed some light on this situation.

Please feel free top let me know f you need any further assistance.

Kind regards
