Works only like dvd player, does not burn

Hello and Welcome to Fixya.

Seems like you're having a software issue that prevents your system to read/run a disc when inside the operating system. I have included the official fix from Microsoft:

DVD Drive Troubleshooting

All you have to do is to click on "Run Now" and follow the on screen prompts - just remember to eject any CD that you may have inside the drive.

Please note that if this does not work, then the drive needs to be replaced. You may contact LG for replacement options in case that happens.

Hope this helps and Thanks for using FixYa.

Sometimes it doesn't read CD

1. When an optical drive doesn't read or recognize CD/DVD the unit is in need of replacement. Units can be straight out of the box and fail.
check the connection to the device ( cable) and the power to the unit

Hi,My dvd writer can no-longer read/burn cds and

Open the draw and give it a blast with compressed air from an aerosol can or play a CD lens cleaning disk, if that doesn't work, don't try too hard, get a second hand replacement from ebay or any second hand shop you have near you.

My dvd worked , but

Set your properties to a slower speed for the drive, also try to avoid NERO and programs which add some loss of CPU during the burn, or yet, let the burn happen and not be present on the pc which you are burning from, loss of CACHE and loss of RAM could be the issue. Make sure your PC is scanned for viruses, and spamware which could cause loss of RAM, go into your properties for the burn program and set the speed from BEST to the current speed listed on the drive. Look at the TOP of the drive(if you have access) look for the speed like 8x, 10x, 24x, and set your burn speed from FAST or BEST to the speed listed -1x or -2x. If your drive says 24x, burn at 20x, if your drive says 8x, burn at 6x, this helps the motor, laser, your pc, operate and burn at optimum properties without worry of a crash n burn and having coaster DVD's all over the house...

Good luck!

Hi Katana,

    • Download and install CCleaner (free) from Piriform

    • Run the cleaner to remove old un-needed temp files

    • Select the StartUp tab and look for any programs that you know you installed but no longer use or need, and disable them. Caution, do not disable any system files unless you absolutely know what they do and that you do not need them.

    • Run the Registry cleaner, when asked if you want to backup the registry, select YES, and save to a file you will remember just in case. I have used this program hundreds of time on many different system and it has never caused a problem, but you want to be safe, backup the Registry.

    • If asked about a particular file that it wants to clean, select "yes to all"

    • Reboot

Windows should reinstall the drive when the computer boots back up.

If this does not resolve your problem, try the following.

If you take all these step and your player still doesn't work right, chances are your CD/DVD componet needs to be replaced. Good Luck,

    • If this helps resolve your issue, would you please rate the solution.

Hi lorena,

Here is what I suggest you try.

  • Download and install CCleaner (free) from Piriform- http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
    • Run the cleaner to remove old un-needed temp files

    • Select the StartUp tab and look for any programs that you know you installed but no longer use or need, and disable them. Caution, do not disable any system files unless you absolutely know what they do and that you do not need them.

If this does not resolve your problem, try the following

If VLC will not play a CD/DVD, try this,

    • Use the Device Manager and uninstall the burners drivers

    • Run the Registry cleaner in CCleaner again, this time in Windows Safe Mode. Remember to backup the Registry

    • Reboot, Windows should reinstall the DVD burner

My CD/DVD drive is: HL-DT-ST

Because they handle two kinds of media, combination drives essentially have two optical pickup assemblies in one package. CDs and DVDs both look the same, but they need different laser light wavelengths to read and write them. It's not uncommon for a drive to go bad the way you're describing, where one kind of disc begins not working while the other kind is unaffected.

An optical assembly is two parts: the laser to generate the light for reading and writing, and a sensor to pick up the light that is reflected for reading. Over time the laser power drops, and there's not enough light for the disc to be read reliably or, as in your case, to even detect the disc. Since you say you've burned numerous CDs, you've put more wear on the CD side, so it's probably just worn out.

There are internal adjustments to tweak the laser power and information is out on the Web about how to squeeze a little more life out of the drive. But the cost of a new combo drive is so low now that there's no reason not to simply replace one when it fails. TigerDirect is one company I buy lots of parts from, and they have two drives that are just $20: this one if your current drive is a SATA type (narrow data cable), or this one if your old drive is an IDE drive (a wide 40-pin data cable). I'm just using those for examples, since there are many other sources.

Another option is to get an external USB burner, and then you'd have a drive you could use on different computers if you wanted, and you wouldn't have to go through the effort of replacing an internal drive (although it's not difficult).

My dvd writer is not read dvd only read cd how to

it is not possible to repair the DVD reader....
Some says that replacing the lens would fix the issue...
But if the lens is replaced, the drive may work for one more 6 months thats it...

But for replacing the Lens, it would take around Rs.600...
if u can invest an additional Rs.300, then you can buy a new drive with one year warranty...
