First bet would be to check for a firmware update for the drive from the manufacturer. If the drive is older; you may want to "clean" it with a DVD cleaning kit.

It ssems like that you should replace the drive altogether it might cost more to get the drive fixed then to replace it altogether. DVD writers are pretty cheap these days. Try newegg.com

Hi, you can try a cleaning CD as writers are suseptable to dust; if this does'nt work it is probably a faulty laser and you will need to replace the writer.

the laser (lens) of the Rom is very weak, that's why it cannot read DVD discs. DVD discs are usually larger that CD's and it takes an active lens to play DVD disc.

So if its still under warranty, you can return it, if not, get a lens cleaner and use it to clean the lens of your ROM.

try cleaning the lens of the drive if it doesnot work out, upgrade the firmware of the drive..

Click start go to all program, accessories right click on Run then type in the blank field regedit then follow theses folders : Click these folders -HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} > this will show the DVD/CD-rom then look fo upper filters and lower filters right click on both one at a time I mean if you have it on the screen then left click on delete after deleting both or any one of the two restart the computer then try your DVD-rom if it will be detected and if it will read any discs

Please do check on recorder setting. If set to burn on image or virtual device. If your using nero tick on Recorder menu then Choose recorder then set the burner device. Don't choose image or virtual device.

Not to worry.....
All that you need to do is go to
start>right click on ocmputer>left click on computer>click on properties>on the left side you would find device manager click on device manager>in the device manager you would find an option CD/DVD ROM drives click on the plus sign against that and then right click on the option you have there and from the drop down select uninstall after which you need to restart your computer once.

It's been a while but in DOs you need two drivers to acess a CD drive. One is a a generic driver loaded by your autoexec called MSCDEX.EXE. That should look something like

LOADHIGH=X:\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001

The next one you will need is the specific driver for the drive. For an LG I think it is gscdrom.sys
So for this you need an entry in your config.sys that looks like the following.

DEVICEHIGH=X:\GSCDROM.SYS /D:MSCD001

X is the drive you are booting from.

get some cleaning lense cleaning solution but a bit on a disk a few drops let it spin till disk is dry then try again also restart your computer

The cd / dvd driver is generic and usually there is no problem with that. What you can see at an empty drive (e.g. cd, dvd, dvd ram e.t.c.) is a little bit "random" or takes mentioned from the last read media. Anyway have you notice something strange with your drive?

Try a different brand of dvd as the one your are using is not compatible with your burner.

You could pay a technician $20 to $50 to trouble-shoot, with no guarantee of "success", or you could pay $40, and buy a replacement device. It's your money, and your choice.

writting problem

Disconnect the "data" and "power" cables from the drive.
Remove the drive.
Look at the labels on the "back".
You should see some pairs of gold-coloured pins:
MA(ster)
SL(ave)
C(able)S(elect)

Move the small jumper to the 'CS' position.
Reinsert the drive.
Reconnect the "data" and "power" cables.
Restart your computer.
Now, it should be detected.

If not, move that small jumper to 'MA', and try again.

If that still fails, move the small jumper to 'SL' and try again.

CD/DVD Is Not Recognized
Many times, after inserting a disc into the CD or DVD drive, the disc is not recognized by that drive. CD-read and DVD-read issues can be caused by many sources. Perform the procedures presented in this General Computer Advice article when troubleshooting CD-read and DVD-read issues.

Begin with the first procedure and continue through the list. Try using the CD or DVD after each procedure is completed. For any procedure that requires changing current system settings, record the original settings before completing the procedure.

1. Verify that the correct disc (CD/DVD) is used when prompted to insert the disc.
2. For programs on DVD, verify that the drive containing the DVD is a DVD drive and not a CD-ROM drive. Most DVD drives will haveDVD printed on the front of the drive. For programs on DVD, consider the following:

• DVD drives can read both DVD's and CD's.
• CD-ROM drives can read only CD's.

1. If multiple disc drives (e.g., CD-ROM and CD-RW, or DVD and DVD-RW, or CD-ROM and DVD-RW, etc.) exist on the computer that can read the disc (refer to the items under Step 2), insert the CD or DVD into the other drive and try the program again.
2. If you are attempting to install a program and the installation does not begin after inserting the CD/DVD into the proper drive, refer to the program's instructions for the installation procedure.
3. Clean the CD/DVD in the following manner:

1. Place a small amount of nonabrasive liquid soap on the shiny side of the CD/DVD.
2. Using your fingertips and warm water, gently rub the soap on the CD/DVD in a circular motion.
3. Rinse the CD/DVD thoroughly and dry it using a clean, soft T-shirt or lint-free towel. (Do not use paper towels or tissue paper.)

1. Try to use a different CD or DVD in the drive to see if that disc can be read.
2. If possible, insert the problem CD or DVD into the DVD or CD drive of another computer to see if the issue persists.
