hi ive got a canon mp500 printer and im having a problem now ive changed offices. all my ink is new and all original canon and the correct numbers, but it says "more than one ink tank of the following colour is installed" and the screen points to the smaller black cartridge. but it needs 2 blacks anyhow a 8 and a 5. so im scratching my head whilst using my old crappy epson. please help, james. p.s - i dont have an instruction book sadly so if i need to press any buttons etc please be gentle with me and indicate where/what colour or shape the button is your references please - sorry for being lame! thanks
I think I have come up with a solution!
When the error happens:
Open the cover and re-seat the cartridge.
Tilt the whole printer forward about 30 degrees or more
Close the cover.
This
has worked for me multiple times now. I think there is a small sensor
behind the contact chip that detects ink levels and when my printer is
flat the level of ink is lower than the sensor, when I tilt the printer
the error vanishes because the ink covers the sensor. Though I am not
sure why the software in the printer determines that there are duplicate cartridges instead of just a low ink warning.
If
you still can't get it try taking a standard pencil eraser and gently
rub it over the contacts to clean off any oxidation, also do this to
the prongs that contact the chip that are inside the cartridge carrier,
They bend easily so do it very lightly.

I replaced the magenta ink tank and got the message that the cartridge was no recognized so bought another new one, CANON OEM, and it still says U043 The following ink tank cannot be recognized I cannot scan either with it locked up like this and the stop/reset button does nothing when I hold it down for several seconds. HELP :(
I had the u043 problem on the blue cartridge on my mp830.
I was using non-original replacement inks but re-using the chips from the originals - replacing the blue cartridge would cause it randomly work but i then noticed the chip holder was not centred so I realigned it and hey presto! the problem was solved first time.

We receintly filled all of our ink cartidges and when I tried to print, the printer accepts the paper but when it is done and spits the page out their is nothing printed/showed on the paper. (while the paper is going through the printer/ink thingy, goes back and forth like it is really printing something. But thiers nothing printed apart from a very light glare of the document I wanted to print.) Hopefully somebody knows whats up out thier and can PLEASE HELP ME!!! THANK YOU
When you filled your cartridges were they empty? If so there is a good possibility that the nozzles are gummed and dried up. If you are going to fill them yourself watch the indicator that comes up on the screen it will tell you when you are getting low. If you get a low indication fill it asap. This will keep your nozzles wet and free flowing. Waiting until its empty can cause them to gum up and altimately dry out. My solution is to go to the store buy brand new cartridges. Go through the the full set up that your manufacture recomends. This means using the install new ink cartridge utility that came with your printer. Print a test page and print a nozzle aligment page. Just remember never let your ink completely run out before filling. If you follow this you will never run into this problem again.

Error Code 5100
For error 5100 try the following, I know it works on some Canon printers:
Unplug printer, press and hold "resume" button, press "power" button and hold down, release "resume", press "resume", release and press again. Release both buttons and now press "resume" 4 times. Power off. Re-start.
Hope this helps.

I take the cyan out, when I put it back in close the lid, the same message comes on. I have unpluged the printer with the same message after waiting a few minutes. would you suggest to take all of the tanks out and putting them back in? Any suggestion will help.
Other forums report this problem as a faulty ink cartridge that cannot be recognized or gets recognized as the wrong color. Calling canon tech support will usually result in a free replacement from Canon. If not, try purchasing a new cart before ditching the printer.

Hi,
I would like to try and clean the print head on my canon i860
printer before I invest in either a new print head or new printer
altogether. I can't figure out how to remove it. I don't see any screws
readily visable. Any thoughts on how I can do this without breaking
something?
Thanks
The gray-colored arm (it's not that small) is to the right of the cyan cartridge. It is the arm or extension of the gray-colored hinged cover. Remove all ink cartridges, lift the gray-colored arm up, and pull the print head out. Clean the print head with a cotton ball soaked with water or rubbing alcohol. Dry and re-install the print head.

Used printer very little over period of 6-ish months, but previously worked very well. Now it won't recognize the magenta cartridge. Have only used OEM cartridges. When error received, ink tank was about 1/2 full and had not been touched or monkeyed with in any way. Replaced cartridge anyway -- still won't recognize cartridge. What now? The machine is locked up.
I had the same problem. I was using original brand cartridges and it was still not working. Here's how I got it to work. I recommend doing each step and then trying to print a test page to see if it is working.
1. I used a Q-tip with Isopropyl Alcohol and cleaned the gold contacts on both the cartridge and the mating contacts in the printer.
2. Then from the Setup Menu, I found a menu called Tools. From there I ran "Align Print Cartridges".
3. From the same menu I also ran "Clean Print Cartridges"
4. I then ran a few test prints by going into the Setup Menu and then choosing "Print Report" and then selecting "Self-Test Report". It prints grid patterns in black & white as well as magenta, yellow and blue. The black grid pattern had some missing lines until I printed this report a few times.
5. I made a few photocopies and now the printouts no longer have large stripes of missing ink as it did in the earlier steps.
Good luck. Hope this helps.

My PGBK cartridge stopped printing. After doing the cleaning recommended through the properties help menu nothing changed. The test pattern doesn't show anything where the PGBK pattern should be - NOTHING!
After removing all the ink cartridges, I removed the print head and soaked it in propyl alcohol overnight. Then blew it out gently with an aerosol 'air duster' and washed it again in fresh propyl alcohol followed by another blowing out. After gently blotting the print heads on a soft tissue and replacing the print head plus cartridges, it necessitated two deep cleans to get the inks through and all now works again.
Make sure that you switch off the printer at its On/Off switch and not at the supply. I think I may have done this and left the heads not parked properly - hence the drying out!

Can you help? After changing the cartridges, I keep getting a message about the ink head being incorrect...I am directed to press 'OK' which does not help; then to turn printer off and on again, which helps momentarily. I don't know anything about print heads and didn't move or change anything but the ink cartridges. (Using Canon ink..the same as before.) It will not print at all.
Cleaning your head might resolve your problem. Perform the below steps to clean the head:
Print Head Cleaning / Head Refreshing
If the printed nozzle check pattern is broken, missing, or a specific color is not printed, clean the print head (Cleaning) or print head deep cleaning (Deep Cleaning).
Note:
Overview:
Step1:
Print the Nozzle Check Pattern.
To check whether the print head nozzles are clogged, print the Nozzle Check Pattern.
If the print quality is poor, perform print head cleaning.
Step 2:
Perform print head cleaning.
This unclogs the print head nozzles
Print the Nozzle Check Pattern again.
To check whether the print head nozzles are clogged, print the Nozzle Check Pattern.
If the print quality is still poor, perform two print head cleanings.
Print the Nozzle Check Pattern again.
Step 3:
Perform deep print head cleaning.
This is a more powerful cleaning.
Displaying the Maintenance screen
Print Nozzle Check Pattern
< 1 > The normal nozzle check pattern
< 2 > The abnormal nozzle check pattern
< 3 > Some black ink lines are broken.
< 4 > White lines are present in the color ink pattern.
< 5 > Both black and color inks are not present.
Note:
Print Head Cleaning:
Deep (Print Head) cleaning:
Note:
Do not do any other operations until print head cleaning is completed.
I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
Note:
Do not do any other operations until print head deep cleaning is completed.
Note:
If the printed result does not improve even after doing print head deep cleaning, turn off the printer. Then, after 24 hours or later, do print head deep cleaning again. (After a given time interval, ink could dissolve itself, resulting in ink unclogging.)
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!
