How to get download sound drivers for IBM R40

The same model ThinkPad can have different types of network, video and audio drivers and unless you know exactly which one is installed in your ThinkPad, you need to download all the drivers and install each driver until you find the right driver.
When you download the drivers, write down the device driver and it’s file name so you have a record of which driver you are installing and which directory the unzipped files are located on your hard drive.
Go to the IBM/Lenovo WEB site - support/download page and download the latest Windows XP or Vista device drivers for your model computer, Use this link: -
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?template=%2Fproductselection%2Flandingpages%2FbrowseByProductLandingPage.vm&sitestyle=lenovo&brandind=10&validate=true
You can download the various drivers and then you click on and run the various driver files, they will then unzip and expand into a sub folder on C:\drivers Then install the various drivers from this folder (run the set-up file).

Thinkpad r40 wont boot - has no post beeps- lights

Hi,
During the boot at the THINKPAD SCREEN press the Thinkvantage key ( Blue button ) it will launch rescue and recovery and allow you to reboot factory. This only works if you did not corrupted/deleted the rescue and recovery hidden partition on the HDD. Otherwise you will need the rescue and recovery CD to proceed. IBM/Lenovo support should be able to provide you the CD.
Might be a defective hdd aswell, in this case to make sure you can run a DFT test, www.google.com -> Look up for " Test DFT " ( Drive fitness tool from hitachi, will make an hardware diag if hdd failure - error code 0x00 = everything fine, other code = Issue - You can look up for accurate code explanation on hitachi website )
As well might be a LCD/Motherboard/Graphic card issue in this case might be related to 3 part, Inverter card, LCD cable or LCD Panel ( Or systemboard, just to make sure try with an external display if the issue reproduce it's systemboard/graphic card related, if not LCD related ).
If you are still entitled to warranty then all theses hardware failures are covered by the terms. You should have the parts stated below replaced as it s a common issue with Thinkpads.
In case you are out of warranty cover you still can try to subscribe to a warranty extension, you can check on www.lenovo.com , otherwise you might want to order theses parts on a website such as ebay.
To swap the pieces requires quiet advanced skills as you might have to take down the whole computer, obviously LCD Panel included ( Unless it's hdd related )
Unfortunalty this is hardware related, not much you can do...
thanks and have a nice day J-

I have an IBM R40- I bought it off of Craigslist

If you are unable to boot into safe mode by tapping F8 during the IBM splash screen then you will need a windows Install disc to boot off of and fix your boot command. If you don't have a disc then try to borrow a friends, you need to boot off that disc do that you can get to the recovery console and fix your boot menu.

What on bios is just what you answer yes or no but probably if there is any terminology been used that only where you might be confused but on bios is not compulsory for you to pass through bios you can leave the system and never press the Functional key been ask to press to move to bios settings and if you are tarckle the dates and time then move your arrow keys to the advanced settings from there click on the date is already shown like this 00:00:00 or better still with some kind of old date then on each of the 00: click on your keyboard the - (minus) and + (plus) on the keyboard to adjust the date to the current one ok and then press F10 to save and exit.

Multi color vertical lines on my R40 monitor

this usually means that the display is broken. i'm sorry to inform that this can only be repaired by replacing the LCD module, which costs quite a lot of money (an estimated 60% of the price for a brand new laptop)

Hello, Meagan.

Sounds like an operating system problem.

Boot your system to Safe Mode (press F8 repeatedly). Go to System Restore and choose a date when your system worked OK. Note: with System Restore, everything, including your documents and other files you saved on the hard drive, will roll back to that date.

If you can't access System Restore by Safe Mode, try Offline System Restore:
1. Boot from the DVD
2. Select the Language
3. Click on "Repair your Computer" on the Install now screen
4. Click next on the System Recovery Options screen
5. Click on System Restore.
6. Choose the date to which you want to restore

If still a problem, the last choices are Factory Restore and reinstall. Accessing Factory Restore (restores to the factory settings and will wipe out anything that you have installed or saved on your PC), is dependent on your hardware manufacturer. Boot your system and press F10, F11, Alt+F10, or Ctrl+F11 to access Factory Restore. Follow the prompts.

If still not resolved, you'll probably need to reinstall your operating system.

Hope this helps.

Put hd160gb into it, is it feasible?

in order to find out, first look at the pins at the back of BOTH hard drives. if it looks like 44 pins in the back, you are looking at an ide hard drive. more then likely your 30gb might be ide. if your 160 has different pins then the 30gb, it will not work inside the laptop as it may be too old for upgrade.

however if you go online to shop, try ebay or websites that sell them.

My speakers are on but sound does not come out,

Hi,

Well, you don't loose your sound, you loose your sound card setup and driver, you need to reinstall the audio card in another slot PCI, ( if is a external sound card) and install again the sound card drivers. If is internal sound, onboard audio, you need to go into BIOS and disable, and reenable the audio card, and reinstall the drivers. it should work

Good luck!
And Thanks.

Sounds like it very well may be a hard drive issue. Have you tried booting to safe mode?

This can be done by pressing [F8] when the computer is powered on and selecting "Safe Mode" from the menu;
