Remember this is a DC output...Make sure you have the right wire hooked together. What I mean is if you soldered the wires make you didn't reverse the negative and positive. Otherwise look for a new power supply.
I have had to replace mine a few times.

No sound inspite of checking all parameters

Be sure that you have the correct sound card driver, if it uses an AC97 driver there are several different versions, also check that the sound did not automatically mute itself. Check the bios that the sound card is enabled.
Quite often the "recovery disk" that comes with the pc will reload windows and with generic sound and video drivers, they have to be replaced with the exact driver for the hardware the pc has - the best bet is to remove the old drivers first then go to IBM and look up the exact model number and see which drivers are recommended or available, usually also the IBM site will list the possible drivers for sound and they are usually available from the manufacturer site. Here's the link for IBM http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-46024.html

I have bought by mail order an IBM Think Pad

Did you get a complete set of IBM "System Recovery" CDs/DVDs?
If so, then reinstall Microsoft Windows, which will install all the IBM-provided software to support the DVD drive.

If you did not get those CDs/DVDs, you will need to contact IBM/Lenovo, and for about $60 (shipping included), obtain a replacement set.

I cannot enable the touchpad settings.

Hi there...

First of all has the touch pad ever worked?

Lets give this a try, go to the START button and left click, look for the CONTROL PANEL and double click on it.

When the Control Panel opens look for the MOUSE and double click to open page, on the tabs look for ULTRANAV, you should see a check mark box, ensure that there is a check mark under the Enable Touch Pad, hit the APPLY and OK.

Voila, your touch pad should start working.

I have a 160 Gig Seagate drive but my R40 does not

Make sure you are using the NTFS file system and not FAT32. If so you can convert the existing file system. Also check the IBM support page for a BIOS upgrade for your model, that may help with the larger drive issues that plague alot of these machines. Just make sure to follow the directions carefully. BIOS upgrades can either got great or destroy the PC totally.
