1 Shutdown your machine and make sure that the charger is plugged in before doing the reset. Turn on the machine.

I have a r40 ibm laptop problem is date &
Assuming that you used the correct battery go ahead and unplug and replug the cmos batter back into its connector.
Go into the BIOS and set the date and time properly. Then unplug the battery and save the changes and exit.
See if the message comes back, if it doesn't then your good to go. If the message still comes back then the motheroard isn't keeping memeory at all.
Go ahead and shut off the machine for about 15 minutes. Then only plug the ac adapter up and hopefully the message stays away. If it does then that means the battery is good and your motherboard is good as well.
if you leave it off and then turn the laptop on and that error message comes back then you need to change out the motherboard.
I bought a used ibm
When you say you tried to load XP Pro, did the hard drive already have XP installed or are you installing it fresh from a CD? If you are installing it fresh from the CD and it is asking you to reboot, it seems as if you are letting it try to boot again from the CD. When it reboots and says "Press any key to boot from CD..." don't press anything, just let it boot. It should finalize the installation there!
Hope that helps!
I have a T40 IBM
Hello,
To correct this issue, you will need to remove the PCI wireless card from your laptop or disable the mini PCI settings in the BIOS menu.
On IBM's, the Mini PCI card slot is usually at the back of computer.
After removing card or disabling the mini PCI settings in the BIOS menu, boot your computer. Make sure to update your BIOS. The new BIOS version can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website.
This issue has been corrected in the latests BIOS updates released.
After updating the BIOS, you can reseat the PCI Wireless card or enable the mini PCI settings in the BIOS menu.
Note that once you have removed the wireless card, you will not have wireless connection until you update the bios and replace it.
Hope this helps.
Cmos password for ibm r40
You will have to remember it. IBM puts a security chip on the motherboard, the bios password is burned into this, and there is no way around it. There are a few places that will replace the chip, but they are very expensive. The only other way is to replace the motherboard. I've found that replacing the motherboard is cheaper than having the chip replaced, so, if possible, remember the password.

IBM R40 HOW ICAN UNLOCK
Hi,
This is only possible is you are using Windows XP. If your operating system is windows Xp, follow the steps below:
- Turn on your laptop and allow it get to the stage where is will ask for user/log password
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Del your keyboard.
- A user name and password prompt will pop up.
- On the user name type in "administrator
- On the password, type in "administrator"
- and you windows will open, go to control panel from there to change the password.
That's all. In other words, the user name and password is administrator.
But
in the case of windows Vista, you will have to re-run windows operating
system, because vista security is very tight and its difficult to break
into its password.
Take care
Forgot BIOS password. When i
you should try to dopen it up, locate the cmos battery, plug it out for about 30 minutes and put it back then test if bios has been cleared. if not, try to google and find out backdoor bios passwords for your model. hope this helps.
I look for pointer driver for IBM ThinkPad R40
Navigate here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/migr-46024.html
Click the link for Mouse/TrackPoint
Select the driver for the Windows installation you are using.
Note: The machine type on the R40 does not matter for the Mouse/TrackPoint driver, only the Windows version you have installed.

I have hp dv4-1465dx, how to reset bios without having OS
I'll spare you the rant on dealing with "cracks" but will say that damaged or corrupted firmware in BIOS's is a major problem that is not always correctable. It is possible you have bricked your system. Especially if the BIOS is not in a socket but hardwired to the mainboard and can't be easily replaced.
The problem is that if the BIOS is the issue you aren't going to get past POST to read anything from any disk [hard, USB, CD-Rom] so the system becomes totally unbootable from any source because the system is unaware of any of these sources as the BIOS firmware hasn't provided the system the data to access them. None of the I/O's will function so you won't be able to flash the BIOS ROM with an replacement for the damaged code.
Your best bet is if your BIOS is socket monted, in which case you can purchase a replacement and swap it out for the damaged one which will resolve your problem as the code on the new one will be intact.
You can do it even if its not socketed, but un-soldering and re-soldering a BOIS chip onto a mainboard without damaging the tracings is no easy trick even for an accomplished repair tech.
Sorry I couldn't do better for you. I hope it works out.
My computer is slow and freezes all the time and
If
you are getting different problems at different times, they you have to
start handling things slowly to exactly pin point the issue. It will
be great if you can also document the error messages, when you get it,
the windows version you are using etc so we can provide you more
accurate steps and identify the exact issue.
First if you are
using windows XP restart the computer in safe mode and try using it (if
you wanted to use internet - wired) then restart the computer in safe
mode networking.
Procedure to restart computer in safe mode:
Restart
computer, keep tapping F8 key on the keyboard, instead of going to
windows it will show up a windows advanced boot menu, where you need to
use your up or down arrow key to navigate the control to Safe mode /
safe mode with networking and hit enter key. this will show some
commands / text on your screen and take you to safe mode.
Try
using your computer in safe mode and see if your computer is giving you
any error or if it freezes. If it does not give you any trouble in this
mode then you computer is good, it should be the additional programs
running in the normal mode that is creating the issue. we need to
diagnose further to find it.
If it is freezing / gives your error
message in safe mode itself, then there should be a problem with the
hardware of your computer, we have to find out by eliminating the
hardware one by one.
Do not worry, we can work together pin point the issue and we will help you to resolve this issue.
