staples that block paper path and therefore causes paper jam. also, some paper path sensors gets damaged and the debris can cause paperjam. I suggest you open all levers and check for foreign matters.
put a piece of #28 lbs card-stock into the document feeder guides, turn the wheel/knob to pull the paper/cardstock into the ADF and continue until it either pushes the shard/debris out or stops moving
