Was working great for years in 95 Grand Cherokee; Pulled and tried to use in my 5th wheel to replace ancient tape deck. After quintuple checking connections, ground, constant voltage, Red/Yellow/Black all hooked up properly, reset button behind face pressed, after a full day of research and fighting I finally saw on the label it says 14v; my whole system is outputting a little over 13 constant. I can't find that anything special was installed in the Jeep to increase voltage, what am I missing?! Again, thank you!
I think you will find there is something else wrong related to the setup of the radio or a fuse. The 14 V rating refers to the nominal maximum voltage common in car charging systems which is allowed by a correctly operating regulator in the alternator, and the normal operating voltage should be around 11 to 14 VDC. I think the problem may be related to the radio recognizing the faceplate which was removed and reinstalled, which is related to security checking in the device - check the manual carefully.

SOURCE: 99 jeep cherokee sport 4.0l 6cyl voltage will go to 19v
The problem sounds intermittent, if you put volt meter on the battery while it is at that 19volt mark/reading(on the gauge cluster) you will be able to see if it is true. If your alternator is really charging over 16volts the lights should be getting brighter then usual and/or they are burning out. Find out ASAP, if the alternator has a defective voltage regulator, it needs to be replaced. Prolong use will damage components.
SOURCE: jeep grand cherokee constant grinding noise, and
As weird as it may sound, i'd check the power steering fluid. An empty power steering fluid tank will make the power steering grind and make weird noises, and having it at full lock will worsen the noise and have no fluid to build pressure it might starting jumping the steering around a bit. If the power steering is OK then you will need to take the rear drums apart to check for any broken retainer springs preventing the pads from returning into place and it will keep braking and grinding. Could also just be some rust or a broken off metal part in the drum also, but either way you will need to take the drums off and inspect the springs, clips and pads to ensure everything is OK and nothing stays jammed into braking position. Also be sure to verify the rear brake cylinders in the drums, as it may also be them that don't return to the initial position and keep the brakes on.

I also have a 98 Jeep Cherokee with the same problem. I know I probably need to replace the starter eventually but as of now I turn it to accessory only, pop it in neutral, then start it and it works every time when it wouldn't even try to turn over with it in park. Don't know why it works, but it does. Give it a try.

suggest you have altenator checked, that's a sign you're not getting proper voltage to battery
